- Clarence McKague (1908-1998)was a highly dedicated teacher, a Northumberland and Durham Board of Education elected trustee 1969-76, a Sunday School teacher and, for many years, Secretary-treasurer of the Castleton Cemetery.
The son of John McKague and Lena McGregor, he and his four siblings (Eric, Ethel, Leila and Florence) were raised on a farm in the Mount Pleasant area of Cramahe Township.
John Clarence McKague was very dedicated to local history and contributed much to the 1988 history book of Cramahe Township and to the 2000 “How Firm A Foundation” history book of the newly amalgamated Cramahe Township when the Village of Colborne and former Cramahe Township united as one municipality.
Clarence McKague’s love of baseball was so great that he made his own catcher’s mitt while a student at Mount Pleasant School and repeatedly stitched up the baseball when it came apart. Afterward, at the high school in Warkworth, rumor has it he and a pal would contrive to be excused from class at the same time so they could sneak in a game of baseball at the windowless side of the school where they would not be observed.
After high school, Clarence attended Normal School at Peterborough with one Helen Runnels of Dartford who had been a Warkworth High School classmate and whom he married in 1933. Helen died in 1984.
Clarence taught at the Red Cloud Public School (Lot 31, Con. 10); the Castleton Continuation School; his alma mater, the Warkworth High School; and ultimately industrial arts and history at East Northumberland Secondary School in Brighton from whence he retired in 1966.
