The old Cramahe Township Town Hall

"The pride of Castleton, this well-proportioned building resembles a temple in design. Dominated by the grand arched entranceway, the front façade is patterned with several masterful examples of the bricklayer’s art. Buttress-like pilasters divide the sides of the building into equal bays and provide frames for the large arched windows. The accent of a medallion window in the central gable is repeated again in the side projections and a fanlight transom completes the double-doored entrance.

Eileen Argyris related in [her book] “How Firm a Foundation” that the structure was built in 1893 at a cost of $3,900 on land purchased the previous year from Jane Garfield for $150. It may have been constructed by a contractor named Crowe.

The interior plan furnished the village with a stage and open gallery for community events. Downstairs, a lock-up cell provided for the security of the local citizenry.

No longer the seat of municipal politics, the slate-roofed hall, nevertheless, continues to be at the heart of social events in the colourful village of Castleton."
