King Street East, Colborne
Sketch and text by Barry King
"Thought to have been built about 1875 when early records indicate that $5,000 was spent on the property, this fine brick house on King Street East [number 69] in Colborne belies its age. The two-storey bay windows projecting from the south and west sides of the structure, and the small porch adorned with gingerbread trim, do much to enhance the standard “farmhouse” design.
At the time of this home’s construction, Colborne had a population of just over 1,000 people and was booming. With a busy two-wharfed harbour, at least five churches, several mills producing various commodities, a tannery, the village boasted a new public hall adjoining a recently opened branch of the Standard Bank. In addition, [there was] a newspaper, and printing office. A station on the Grand Trunk Railway provided up-to-date communications by telegraph or the daily mail delivery.
Today, surrounded by its beautiful gardens, this proud red brick home bespeaks a proud and prosperous age in the history of Colborne."
