Ridge Road3 I n 1951 Mabel Metcalf's two sons attended Pine Grove, Bobby and Billy Metcalf. The late Harold Harnden started Pine Grove school in 1932. His memoirs say: "All the kids took their lunches to school in a honey or lard pail." "When it was really cold Dad would harness and hitch the horses to a sleigh and take my siblings and me, together with the neighbour's children to school". "On really dark days little school work was done as there were no lights". Harold mentioned some special events at Pine Grove: Arbour Day in late May when students participated in cleaning the school yard. Christmas Concerts when all eight grades practiced skits and recitations for the big Christmas Concert, when the parent were invited to attend. A favourite song was "Jolly Old St. Nickolas. School Fairs that were held in late September at the Castleton Public School. Students participated in singing, reading poetry, sewing, and also competitions which included vegetables that the students had grown.
