It starts with the ancestries and stories of my four grandparents, then my parents' lives and finally my own. This is not a genealogical exercise, nor traditional history -- although I do suggest we have a drop of royal blood. A great deal of scholarly research went into this project, but I also include family memories, or perhaps myths, humour and theorising about why we are what we are. 'Toil', in the title, refers to the extraordinary work our ancestors endured on the land, on ships, in factories and at home, including child-birth. 'Travel' refers to how our ancestors moved across Europe to UK and Canada and, for some, away from Canada. 'Tragedy' refers to shipwrecks, fires, accidents, poverty, child-deaths and family desertions. 'Triumph' because, in spite of, or perhaps because of, these trials and travails we survived and prospered. This is 'our' story -- the story of our Metcalf, Rose, Peebles and Stoker families.
