George I. Merriman, Grand Trunk Railway Station Agent
George Isaiah Merriman (1843-1917)
Obituary of George I. Merriman, The Colborne Express newspaper, Thursday, January 18,1917 --- ‘In the midst of Life we are in Death’ was exemplified in the unexpected and sudden death of Mr. G. I. Merriman, who was a lifelong, well-known resident of Colborne. Around town as usual, apparently in his usual health, and with his characteristic cheery greeting to friends, until past noon on Friday, Jan 12th 1917, the announcement of his death a few hours after was a great shock to his many friends and acquaintances. He was reading the paper, as was his custom after lunch, and was conversing with Mrs. Merriman and granddaughter, when his head fell forward and he breathed his last two breathes minutes after, heart failure being the cause of death. The funeral service was held at the home Sunday afternoon, the Rev. T.J. O’Connor-Fenton conducting the services of the Church of England, of which the deceased had been a lifelong member. There was a large attendance of citizens and friends. The burial was in the East Colborne Cemetery. Relatives and friends from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. R.R. Harte (nee Annie Merriman, daughter); Miss Kate Harte (granddaughter) of Hamilton; Mrs. John Black (sister), Stirling; Mr. John M. Black (nephew) of Montreal: Mr. Vinton R. Merriman (son) and Mrs. Merriman and three children of Belleville; Mr. C. V. Ketchum of Gananoque and Mr. J.C. Cumming, who came home from Toronto. There was large number of floral tokens from friends and a wreath from Grand Trunk Railway (GTR) employees at the Colborne station where the deceased was Station Master for over 30 years. Mr. Merriman was descended from Jacobite and Puritan stock. He was the younger son of the late Mr. James Monroe Merriman, Collector of Customs, and Mrs. Merriman (nee Maria Livingston). He was born in Colborne on February 2nd 1843 and consequently was in his 74th year of age.
