Among the most prosperous banking institutions in DuPage county is the Farmers and Mer- i chants Bank situated in this thrivâ€" ing village. This bank was started in january, ’92, and has always done a clean, flourishing business, . to the satisfaction of its patrons oi all classes. The ofï¬cers are among our oldest and best citizens, men of integrity and business ability. They do a general banking and col- lecting business. They are located in their own handsome brick block in which is also the postoï¬ice, RE- Ponn ofï¬ce and editorial rooms of the Columbian Magazine. The ofï¬cers are Chas. Cnrtiss, presi- dent; Dr. W. A. Tope, vice presi- 3dent; W. H. Edwards, cashier. Charles Curtiss, the president, is one of the pioneers of the village and has long held the respect and esteem of our citizens. He was president of the village for many years and such was the conï¬dence The retrospect for 1895 gives us much to be lhanklul (or, so let us this Thanksgiving day truly give thanks for past muniï¬cent bless- ings and work for continued peace and harmony and the general good of our village. puchfllcfl In“! a well nenten truck. On this thoroughlnrc grew up the villa e 0! Downers Grove. which w-s incotpornted on the gut day of Itch. 1873. 1TH this Thanksgiving issue of the REPORTER we submit to the general public a review of the business resources oi Downers Grove; not that the subject matter is new to our readers, but to enable our people to take an inventory of stock, and to more fully realize the value of the foundation upon which the village of Downers Grove is being built and the resources at its command. It is as unwise for us to underestimate our ability as it is foolish to exalt them. The charge of "old logyism" and “being behind the times," when taken in cona nection with what actually exists, only brings out more clearly the fact that the village owes its stability to the integrity and conservatism of its citizens, and in consequence thereoi is prepared to sail along with the prosperous breezes that are now ï¬lling its sails. or in case of a storm arising will be fully prepared to weather the gale. On all moral questions the people of Downers Grove have generally stood [or right principles, and il necessary to maintain them have been aggressive. in the past our citizens have been, as a rule, prompt to meet the de. mands made upon them, and we have faith to believe that they will still continue so to do. The pathway of every human life is strewn along with mistakes that have been made, but a wise Providence has made provision whereby many of them can be rectiï¬ed; what is true of an individual is just as true of a village made up as it is Ms collection of individuals. These mistakes should n be magniï¬ed but should be remedied whenever the ability and oppor nity to do so presents itsell. ‘ Our churches and public schools should r eive the heartiest support; ‘ religion and education, good morals and i elligencc are elements that . are second to none lot the highest devel ments of the community. Our village board during the past year have done much efï¬cient work in the way oi improvement, and much more would have been «lone had the means at their command justified them.
