Ontario, at the present time, is without that representation in the Cabinet to which she is entitled under the arrangement made in 1.867. It is idle to say that the people of the Province would be satised with-any de- parture from that arrangement which, for the present at all events,` necessary to give con lidenco in the administration of public affairs. We dunot believe in sec- tionalism-tha.t is to say, that spirit which would override the interests of one Pre- vinco for the sake of anothor-but at the same time we cannot help seeing that we have not yet reached that stage in the de- velopmcut of Confederation when ' the Ministry can be chosen indilferently from the Dominion. We can easily imagine the feeling of distrust that would be imme- diately excited in Nova Scetia were it pro- poseel to deprive her of one of her repre- sentatives in the Cabinet. Indeed large and liberal as are the views of Dr. Tapper, her ablost statesman, he would be the last to consent to any such proposal. which would weaken his strength in the Proviu ce which he has succeeded in welding so har- moniously into the Union: and it is fair to assume that his sentiments are more or less the sentiments of the leaders "of the other sections of the Dominion. Under these circumstances it is natural that the people of Ontario should look forward cur- iously to the new shule which all of then: expect so condently. It would be cer- tainly a most prudent move on the part of the leader of the Government were he in the anticipated reconstruction, to recognize the claims of that part of Ontario--the Ot- tawa Valley where he is likely to obtain a. Jogitimate support so long as his policy eon- tinues to be framed and carved out in a liberal and patriotic spirit. He has certainly the key of the political situation, and it would be a marvellous contrast. with his former sagacity, were he to lose it now. The new Parliament, unless it should unac- countably act at variance with the prevail- ing public opinion, can have no disposition whatever to give the government of the country into other hands. The history of the past ve years sifords. that conclusive evidence of the success of the policy of the present Ministry which must be all power- ful in the estimation of a body of men, the majority of whom are already pledged to the continuance of the existing condition of things. All that is really necessary is a. judicious addition of strength to give the party of Union and Progress 3. lo g lease of power for many years. After al , there is little diversity of opinion among the leading men of the Government andfpposition on the great questions of legislation-what I dilference |there is exists entirely on matters of detail. In view of this fact, it will be easy enough to attract all that support to the Cabinet from the Province of ntario, necessary to give Government a- majority beyond dispute in` every section of the Deninion.-0ttawa Citizen. Ixpcnditurc . ..... emu?-coo auuuula. ' A reconstruction of the Gevernment, it is now generally admitted by friende of the Government, is immediately on the cards. It in not necessary to refer again to the cir- cumstances which render it necessary that -several members of the Cabinet should re- tire eo far as Quebec is concerned, in case Sir George Cartier remains away for sev- eral months--a.nd this is a fact generally a.4.lmitte(l--lIr Langevin is well able to leul the members who euppert the Government. for public opinion has fer some time unmis- takably poiuted to him as the tting suc- ccesm >1` of the veteran statesman, who has so long occunied the moat. mm- on vvuuau IHLUFCBLI ue nan always been so faithful an advocate ; and tho fact. that he recently returnccl to the capitul with Dr. Tupper. again given currency to the-rumor, to which we alluded once before, that he will probably be called upon to afford the benefit of his great expcrienco and ability in some way to the public service. When we think of the calm at preeent pre- vailing in Dominion politics, it is not easy to believe that we have no recently emerged from n. erce political contest. To eome per- sons, not well informed on our eeire, the existing dullness might very much look as so much evidence that everything is couleur dc rose! so far as the Government in concen- ed. Such a conclusion would probably be right to the extent that the Government have very little to fear if they act with the discretion and judgment which ought to be expected from the experienced poli- ticians who are dominant at the Council Boerd.
