Parent, Under` Secretary of State, Ordnance Lands B1-such, replying to a letter from this corporation dated Oct. 30th, and stating that in reference to Duff's farm, that the Department had directed a survey to be mode of the property with I view to its sale ; and that s Ian prepared and sent to Mr . Ald1`man Allan wnnl Ir. 6. ---- 5`--~ umluns no nnose uooirmg ouch. ~ Alderman Allen would like to our the opinion of ox-Mayor Droninn ro pectin: this matter, an he understood app icotiono had been very favourably receive by the Government for 2. grant of land in o used as exhibition grounds in connecti n with the Crystal Palace. It soomoi wishes of the Council were not to~ gather realized ; but he was inclin part` and buy the _roma.indor. He II god the nrucurotion of land by some neon `within the city" limits, and the removal!` `of the 7x-ystul Palace, that by so doipg tho city could have mine control in ito management. Alderman Drennan remarked the matter was discussed and rrospen- dence authorized by the_ Conn of last year, he had had a nap prepared of the pro- perty, but subsequently the original sketch was obtained, showing the location of the farm, and itsrelationship with the surround- ing streets, one of which was only 40 feet in` width. He went to Ottawa having the map in his possession, and at`enco. interviewed the Minister of Justice and announced the nature of his business with the Government --to secure, if possible, a Crystal Palace grounds. stated that there was some probability of a Normal School being established here, and that should such be the case, the ci be solicited to give an eligible site, of which there was none more suitable than t when the corner of the Duff l`,'a.rln.". Sir J ehn- ` Macdouald, unable by press of duties to de- vote his attention` to this matter satisfactor- ily. had transferred it to Hon. A._Campbell, to whom he (the speaker) was respectfully referred. The Postmaster General he saw and represented that in the division of the Dni farm and its salein lets was only placing it within inuence of the rich and beyond purchase by the peer. Hon. Mr Campbell liscla.imed having entertained the relnotest apprehensicms of such an idea, and gave an attentive audience to the petition of King-_ ston. ` He promised that the streets named should be increased to the proper width- (36 feet`--n.m1 since his (Ald. D.) return home he found that alterations to that efect had V been made in tho snrveyor's plans. The speaker pressed the grant of land for Crys- tal Palace purposes, but was informed that in justice to the county the removal `could not be acquiesced in, not but that personally Hon. Mr Campbell was willing to advance the interests of -this city. He (Ald. D.) then went back to Sir John Macdenald and he regretted that the Minister of Justice endorsed the sentiments of the Postmaster General : and he felt afraid the citywould not get the property unless they gave a cer- tain amount for it. He thought it to the advantage of the city that it should get it ; the sale of lots on North street alone would` pay for the whole property, so that the transa.ctien.woI1ld be a profitable specula- tion. At the same visit he had taken the liberty (if conversing with Sir John Mac- donald relative to the conversion of the Market Battery for market and other com- mercial purposes; but he was sorry to learn that there was an unfavourable report sent to the Government, disa proving of the transfer. However, Sir ohn Macdonald had sent the case for investigation to higher powers, and a competent engineer will he sent to examine the Battery and report whether or notit is serviceable to the Kili- tary Department. Alderman Allen had suggested that a plot of the same farin should be set apart as a market or park. He (Ald. D.) thought that a little ahead of their time, and any steps in that direction he feared would be unsuccessful. Al.l.n-mm.
