Oomplainant s husband, who is employed as a guard in the pen- itentiary, returned home at six o'clock, when sbe told him what had happened, and he said he would have Brock arrested. Upon looking at the kitchen window there were marks as if a person had tried to force it open. William Arnold, brother of the complainant, corroborat. ed his si.ster s statement. The prisoner, explain- ed that he had known Mrs Finn for 17 years, and hearing that her daughters were going to run away, and that they were ill treated by that in- teresting old lady who "takes her hitters, db termined to see her. Accordingly he left his house at fifteen minutes past fourdclock on the morni in question, and proceeded to her residence. Having rapped at the doors without effect he de- termined to enter the house by the window, an easy matter from the top of a shed, which wan open, and which belonged to a room formerly and as a sitting room by Mrs Finn. Prisoner stated that the doers were found by him open which he passed through to Mrs Chosay s cham- bar. When he found out his mistakihe only waited to give the necessary explanations to Mrs Cbosay. Afters patient hearing the magistrate appeared to be willing to give the prisoner cre- dit for the truth of his statement, but at the same time said he should bind the prisoner in his own recognizance to appear it called upon, to answer the charge, and would deliver the evidence to the crown attorney for his opinion. The bench stated its approval of the conduct taken by the complainant in the matter. Mr Indie watched the case on behalf of the com- plainant. The only other case before the court was that of John Williams, charged with drunk- enness, who had, when he had made a beast of himself by drink yesterday afternoon, further made a fool of himself by talking Fenis.n." He had spent 89 in drink since Monday last, and having but one dollar left the court allowed him to use it in paying his fare to Wolfe Island, where he had engaged to work on a farm. The court was crowded during the hearing of the above cases, the audience appearing to consider the sfairas a real godsend in these even going, dull times. v`9wd_ was orderly, fl; _ on lIp|.rt=_of;p-olioa 1!.-I Jor ud 1* Jul] 31_ hue bgen geceivgd. `ins numbbr_ qt 10,000 had _sm_ck _ I ` ` on_ July 16th, but ya: 5 Ion, aid to amount; .IiI.Im1*I9.9'!'. `EE``.` "-`` in - the G u.` _ . "ravine: gf .`v'ova Scoha, Though the cattle disease which has broken out in the Western States, and has r.`ommi`tted great havoc in the localities to which it has been conned, liar-Loot spread to the East, or proved so contagious as was at rnt feared. yet the disease is still view- ed as a matter of dire concern, and the strictest precautions are being maintained to prevent its spread. It has been reported that the disease had broken out in Paris. (Ontario), but happily this report proves to have been unfounded, it having originated in a miaapprehenaion as to the nature of a cattle complaint existing there. The pro- hibition of the importation of American cattle into Canada has given rise to aome complaint. because the stoppage affects the interests of the railways in the western peninsula, and it is claimed that the danger of infection among Canadian cattle is ex- aggerated. It is to be hoped that these representation: will have no weight with the authorities until it is fully established that the danger in really passed. A part of the agricultural wealth of Canada might be endangered by an outbreak of rindapeat; and with the leases that have recently oc- curred in England and Scotland from the cattle._plague kept in mind, our people may well be nervously anxious that strong mea- sures should be persisted in to reduce to I. minimum. al-- -|----- - LIST OF PRIZES. uu. u . ouunnoi (e! N ,.:::,___.__== The report that the negro labourers at the South are ioiuing the Democratic party in large numbers seems to be well establish- ml. A Southerujournal has just published 1-xtracts lrom the Southern press, which go to show that the process of enrolment in Democratic clubs is going on among the blacks in all the Southern States. Cn- tloubtedly the negro vote will be an impor- tant elementin the forthcoming Presiden- us] election, and it appears likely that it will be largely cast for the Democratic candidate. Naturally, from its past succes- ses, the Republican side must be looked up- in as exceedingly strong ; and as a success- ful military chieftnin General Grant is a very eligible candidate; but his prospects of success, so strong at first. are likely to he aected by the Southern vote. This with negro assistance will be strongly Demo~ cratic, and the West is also expected to give a heavy vote for Seymour and Blair.
