At the close of my year's lsbour on this in- tereetiug e-ll, I feel thankful to our great Master for his continued presence and blessing. Our congregations sre large, attentive, and gen- erally prayerful. The people take on interest in the cause of Episcopal lietbodism, and do something to sustain it. Amongst other things they hsve purchased and psid for a splendid new orgsn for the Church in Msllorytown. The or- gsn is s :st-rats one, with ve stops And sll the modern improvements uecesssry to bring out perfection of tone. Ihsve not heard Any church organ in this country so like the cathe- drst orgsns of the old country, so powerful yet soft in tone :9 is ours and one like it in the M. New Connexion Church of this place. Both orgsns were furnished by the some rm-Rey- net`, of Kingston-Ivlto give a good article and cheap withsl. After some inquiry the Major was pointed out to us, dressed in the uniform of a lederal officer. He was a man advan- ced in years, but erect and vigorous, with close curling auburn hair tinged with gre , . prominent nose, clenr-grc.y eyes and a. gea- cral resemblance to Lord Byron, suicient to arrest the attention of any one familiar with the portrnit _of.the poet. ` On invantinntinn we learned that. `In: urn: WILLI l-LIU PUIBTIIU _IJl-IIIU On investigation we learned that `he was one of the many foreign oicers who joined Fremont on his taking command of the Western Department. The marriage was secret, upon the pledge that it should be revealed on his return to England. The rs: Grecian beauty that he met on his ar- rival in Greece made him unfaithful to his Spanish bride. Absence and forgetfulness followed, and after his return to England he declared his intentionof disavowing a marriage valid at the time both under the existing penal laws of England and the laws of Spain. The marriage was kept secret by the deserted wife, whom pride would not allow to prosecute an unavail- ing suit. Of this marriage a son was born. Our informant states that Lady Byron, aware of her husband s many iulidclities, discovered a portion of the correspon- dence with his Spanish wife. She then determined to leave him forever, burying in her own bosom the secret which, if re- vealed, would make her morally, if not le- gqlly, his paramour. , 'Tll()llh Mninr Rvrnn nnnar ..l..:......,=l A... He `ihud commenced a lengthy history of the : Byron fainily, three volumes of which ' were primed and seen by the writer of this, though the history was only brought. down to the time oil the poet s grandfather, and the publisher tailing about this time, the prosecution of the work was suspended. Soon after this he came to America. Be- sides his remarkable facial resemblance to Lord Byron, he was not unlike him in many other respects., 'l`lmt which we wnnld nnfnl-on an n.:. uusu_y utncr respects. . article, however, is not ~eo much a history of this scion of the great post as the was exlremelyjealous of her husband,'that passion even extending to Byron's half- sister, Mrs Leigh, and also to another, the most prominent feature of this revelation. 1: is well established, independent of Mrs L .':ltowe s statements, that, previous to her separation, Lady Byron wrote to Dr. Lush- ington asking his advice in regard to it. Dr. Lushington advised against it; but subsequently, it is stated, after an inter- view with Lady Byron, the doctor advised her to the step which she adopted, which was a separation. This advice was based on a secret revelation made by Lady By- ron. Now, while Mrs Stowe contends, in- directly, thatthis revelation was the sub- stance of the_revolting story she has told, we think Mayor Byron s revelations plainly indicate that it was the fact of Byron s pre- vious msrriage. At any rate, it_is most l probable thatso intelligent` a man as Ms- jor Byron showed himself to be, and search- ; ing as he was for any and every fact con- nected with the great poet s history, would , have known something of the secret mo- I tive of Lady Byron's separation, had it been founded in so monstrous an ac- cusation as` Mrs Stowe impntes to Lady . Byron. we would enforce in this pro- ; mincnce of his statement that Lady Bvron i Some of 41m grapes recently sent overland from California. are described us having arrived in abnd condilion, from the effects of rough riding and careless packing. The most formidable testimony yet brought against Mrs Stowe s unfortunate Byron scandal is that of Lord Wentworth, the sole representative of `Lady Byron s family. Lady Byron was the grand- daughter of Sir Edward Noel . who succeed- ed to the barony of Wentworth, to which she herself succeeded in her turn. After her death this dignity passed to her eldest grandson, and on his death in1862, it was transferred to his brother, Ralph Gordon Noel, Viscount Ockham, the present Lord 1 Lord and La Byron.
