Whitney Ololll, I cont dioooqnI;.;a1:w` Kev. Mr blantl, Wesleyan, uuu mr pmzeaux, one of the Plymouth Bretlm-n, and others, have administered unto him in spiritual things, and he says that for the last three weeks he has felt sure of his final salvation. "I have not the slightest. doubt. yet." he said; I lteljust assure that my sins are forgiven, and that I will go to Heaven, as that I am standing in this cell." He. made no boast of this feeling, and said nothing at all about it except when asked, and then his answer was prompt and decisive He spo_ke`as though that was a matter unalterably settled, and one on which his mind needed not to be assured by repeated assertion ofit. It was remark- able to see the calm, cool, free, even cheerlul way in which he spoke. He assured Mr O`Reil|_v that he had never before his last crime been connected with anygttempts to committe violence on any man: and that when he struck the guard he had no in- tention of killing _him, nor did he and Smith think him dead, as they bound him to prevent him raising the alarm. Mann said, if he had thought the guard was dead he would have remained with him. He determined to be free, and it was the desire for liberty that prompted him to strike the blow; but he intended only to stun the guard and thus eect his escape. He spoke of his connection with the Main- hide raiders. He went in the night along with others to a man's house, bound the man's hands behind his back and proceeded to search the house for money. While they were doing this a boy jumped out of a window, gave the alarm, and before they were aware of the fact they were surrounded. To intimidate his pursuera, and so enable him and his comrades to make their escape, Mann red three pistol shots; without taking any a m, and they escaped to Detroit, where they were captured. He was tried and sentenced to nine years in the Penitentiary. He then went on to speak, at the request of O'Reill_v, Ofhis penitentiary life. He had been pre ty wicked. and had seen a great deal of wic- kedness, hut he found when he went into the penitentiary that he scarcely knew what wickedness was. There was a continual plottiing and scheming; a knit- ting process, as it were," as he expressed it, going on among the convicts, which none but they knew anything about. There was anunder current of depravity, of which even the sharpest keeper had no conception, but which was felt by every prisoner. He could not escape from it. Mann says when he was in the penitentiary he sometimes had longing: after a better life, an ambition to become an honest member of society, to be somebody, and to earn the respect ofhis fellow-men; but the very atmosphere around him was polluted with immorality; and, above all, the thought of so long a term of imprisonment crushed out all hope of reformation, and his sole object was to be free. He thinks if his term had been shorter, say five years, he would have borne it and gone out into the world again with the determination to lead a better life. He gave his opinion with deference, feeling his position; but he was cnnvincsdtrorn his own observation and experience that short terms of imprisonment were the best in the interests of society. Acriminal feels he de- lervea some punishment, and only give him a chance and there is some pros- pects of his reformation. But con- demn him to a long term, and he feels he is excessively punished; he attributes it to malice; he loses all hope, abandons himself to wickedness, and when he gets out he cberislies a grudge against society; he feels that every msn s hand is against him, and therefore his hand is againstevary man. Such were Mann's views, and the uency, clearnoas and precision with which he expressed them were sur- prising. He seemed to have a perfect hor- ,1 ror or the Penitentiary, and declared so- ,-. lemnly that he would far rather go to` the y sca'old than go back to his old dismal - cell in the penitentiary, to be surrounded with all the evil inuences which hs.ao much deplored. O Reilly asked him if he had any last request to make. My mother," said the poor lellow, she is my only earth- ply thought now. God help her, she was perfectly innocent. For the past few weeks observers have expected to see the last act in this bloody and destructive drama of war; but the French have held out against such an ex- pectation and against their enemies with an extraordinary pertinscity. Instead of aur_ rendering, they still talk of war a l`outrance_ A war to the knife with the German armies overrunning the country and town after town falling into German hands, property being destroyed on an immense scale, and s. continued loss of_life, with a hopeless pros- pect ; and yet the French cling to the last straw of hope. German expectations are at fault with respect to the speedy termina- tion of the war; and now enraged at its pro- traction they are bent upon exerting every effort to crush out the resistive powers of the French.
