The usuocintions of Christian so far from declining would sppeu to be taking stronger root in the ntfections of young and old. Religious teachings, the desire of youth, and the pleasures which it ntfords to old age make Chrisununnever-dying holiday. This year it hos been noticed that Christmas has been celebrntcd with grout nrdour. ruL_\_-r:.r_.. ._.._ ....lI Iv--.o -r\ in can n6 ulna A Washington telegram gives some in- Tormation with respect to the instructions 1 and communications at the British Ministef at Washington, which would show that the negotiations respecting the shery question are going against or, the Imperial govern- ment apparently being disposed to yield to u. the demand: of American bluster. We hope that the information is not strictly true, and that an American colouring has been given to it which can be rubbed off. Canadians will have a condence to the last moment that there is no disposition on the part of the Imperial government to sacrice the just rights and the vital in- terests of Canada to American rapncity. It is, however, to be feared that the true importance of the points in dispute may be undervalued in Great Britain, where it would seem at times impossible to infuse colonial views into the minds of certain leaders of public opinion. VB UCCLI DVIUUIDLUU Wllld `DUI-` -I`-\I"" The holiday was well kept up in two of the largest local public institutions, the Peniten_ tisry and Boekwood Asylum; At the Peni- tentiary the convicts had a dinner of corned beef and cabbage (varying from the usual die- lary,) which the prhonore greatly relished. `At Rockwood, where among a few criminal luna- tics are a prepond_ereting number ofunfot-tuna` tea, sent from civil life for care and medical treatment, the festivity was appropriately ofa still more liberal character. Dr. Dickson, the Medical Superintendent, and his assistant olcers, laid in a liberal supply of geese, turkeys, joints of beef, heme and seasonable vegetables, to regale the inmates with a sub- Itantial Christmas dinner, which was served on Monday. A few visitors by the kind in- vitation of Dr. Dickson were privileged to witness the enjoyment which the dinner a'ord- ed to the numerous inmates. On entering the main central hall, a short time before dinner the tables were tound set with the joints and turkeys, geese, etc,and the room bore evidence of great labour and not alittle taste in decoration, with evergreens, paper owers, garlands and mottoes. In this hall it was arranged to mix a certain number of the male and female pa. tients, the males having their seats at one end and the females at the other, while at a table near to a cabinet organ seats were provided for those of the inmates who had been trained to join in singing. Besides the tables in the cen- t,raLhnll,tIo long tables, one in each first oor corridor, were provided respectively for male and female patients. It shows how much the system of kindness does for the insane and how able they are to appreciate the festivity provided for them to learn that the number of insane at Roekwood was on Christmas day 333, and that out of this number so large a proportion as 303 were able to be brought down from their wards and trusted to dine together :_ ....|..|:.. uL...-ol- l..I..-. oh- Inn..- l,.- A:....., noun Klnplu, I W. Shortly before the hour for dinner Ir Terence O'Neil and his brother Inspectors having arrived and interested themselves in seeing .the tables, a few of the inmates were brought in to assist in removing the joints to a room where they were carved, and after this had been aeoompliehed and all was ready, the patients were brought down and took their seats. It wee interesting to notice the restraint exhibited by the lnuatia, and how they all waited until after the saying of grace and the signal was given them to commence. A few of the patiente were allowed to move about and converse with the visitors. One of these, a noted character at Rockwood-Qneen Susan- welcomed the visitors most profusely, accost. ing them as,My lords and gentlemen," tsnd to one portly gentleman she addreseed the title of "Your Royal Highness." The American demand ought to befesisted at the very outset, and turned if possible into a reciprocal arrangement Of which the 1l.eciprocity.'1'reaty would serve as a model. ...... r-.- -. ..-..-..... We need reciprocal trade with Canada. The nation would be benetted by such an ar- rangement. It was materially benetted by the treaty of 1854. And Canada ls anxiuus for such an arrangement. If the two man tries will agree upon a system of mutual trade and trsic, similar to that of 1854. the shery question can be embraced in the set- tlement to the satisfaction of the people of both countries. Nothing is needed on our side but moderation `and judicious diplo macy vosettle the dispute amicably and satisfactorily to both parties. The non-in- tercourae remedy will fail, and deserves to fail.
