At a lmeeting of the County Council the delegates llrom the Provi- sional Directors of the line were present, and were heard on the subject. The report they had prepared shows that the line is to be narrow gauge ; that lumber can be carried from King. ston to Oswego 60 cents per thousand feet cheaper than from Brockville; and that the distance from Pembroke to Albany will not probablyceed 355 {miles by [he new line as against 550 via Lake Champlain, 490 by Otta_ we and Rideau Canal, and 400 by Sand Point and Brockville. The trade of the road, it is believed, would consit at the outset of pine and other lumber to Kingston on its way to the United States, there being, accordingtu the calculation, a trade in sawed lumbar of lrom two to three hundred million fast and from ten to fteen million feat ofsqnare timber annually. Whether such atrade is to be relied on is per; haps open to grave doubt, so long as there is water communication, although there will nu- qnestionably be a portion of this trade secured. A large part of the supplies required by the lnmborers would be takenjrom that district, is at present everything has tobs hauled over im- mensa distaaoas by team, the unrest point to the lumber establishments in the Pembroke district being Sand Point the terminus of the Br-ockville and Ottawa line. It is as a coloni- zation road, however, that its construction is advocated, the report showing how smalls proportion ofattaiuable land is taken up in the townships through which the proposed line is to run_ `The distance it is estimated will be about 140 miles, it being as the crow ies about 115. At that meeting it was very sensibly re- solved that the members of the County Council could not take upon themselves to make such a grantas was asked of them, and remitted the matter to the Reeves of the di'erent townships to ooaault the people. But besides laying the matter before the County Council of Frontenac a deputation proceeded to Pembroke, where the members appear to have been met with great, cordiality. On the way up the souls of the members ware gladdensd with the sight at Sand Point of freight sheds gheaped up with Chicago pork, our of a Western brand and sleigh load after sleigh load ofoats, and alread in imagination they saw long way bills lled with gures oi the amount of freight rushing onwards toswell the prots of the Kingston and Pembroke line. Arrived at Pembroke, they found that thriving place somewhat `divided as to the merits of the scheme, some of the inln- eutial men being in favour of the Canada Central. The presence of Mr James 0 Reilly, Q.C., and his winning ways, as he laid before the County Council all the advantages of the schema, led to the passing of a resolution, by which the members of the County Oouncil pledged themselves to recommend the rate- payers of the County to grant a liberal bonus, at a meeting of tho ratepayers in the evening, Ir 0 R.eilly again held forth, the result being that when Hr Duran moved a resolution, bind- ing tha town of Pembroke to give 825,000, the only tar-ms onwvhich asaeonder could be found were that the sum should be doubled ; and this resolution, it is stated, was carried with grut enthusiasm. So far the affair has on with an clan, to use the French would overcome all diicnlties if be conquered by a sudden and single attack. Politics, however, will be less a feature than interesting news and reading matter, as in the present state oi the country the appetite for political dis- putations appears to have become lost, or I at all events greatly lessened, since the ad- vent of Confederation. which has given a destiny to Canada and harmonized previous discordant political elements. When the time comes, however, that important poli- tical principles have to be battled for, the Kmcsron Gazarra will be found on the side of that body of public men who shall best try to guide the great destiny of Brit- ish North America as a united country, held by a common people, cherishing the traditions and enjoying the political liber- ties of a glorious race.
