The modest cards of invitationissued by Colonel Patterson and his brother oicers of the Third Military District, asking the citizens of Kingston to dancing in camp on Tuesday night, led to a grand military ball and one of the nest entertainments which has been witnessed in Kingston for many a long year. The oicers of the camp more than repaid the courtesies of the citizens of Kingston in asking them to the ball at the City Hall on Friday night last j and their return entertainment of Tuesday night, improvised in the camp, got up hur- riedly, no doubt, and under difculties not seen on the surface, was one that must ever reect credit on the gallantry, spirit,_ and hospitality of a brave and accomplished body of gentlemen. rm... 1...n .....- ..:..,r.. :_ LL- --__.__ -_ ,u'___,_, -uvu: us Evnnvsvunval. The ball was given in the camp enclosure in a building in every way remarkable for its curious history and associations. Dur- ing the American war of 1812 the British government made an appropriation for a frigate for service on the lake. Her name was the Niaga/ra, and all the appointments necessary for a vessel of her class were sup- plied from the English dockyards. But in- stead of building a frigate, which would not have been so serviceable on Lake Ontario as small vessels of lighter draft, the money. was expended in building a vast and sub- stantial house, in which to lodge a ship s crew, ready on emergency to be drafted in- to smaller vessels for service on the lake. Thus the stone frigate Niagara had its origin, and in the days when the Imperial government maintained a naval station at Kingston it "was a swarming hive of naval oicers and jack tars, and the scene of many a prank and much lively jollity: Again, in the time of the rebellion the stone fri- gate was a place of greatjmportanee, though no longer occupied by a ship s crew. Vast stores of arms had been collected at King- ston, the principal arsenal, and these were stored in large quantity in` the Niagara; and from their value it was feared that an attack would be made to gain possession. To provide against this the windows were mounted with small o. 1 u.- any n...uu nu... muuuuvvu vvnvnl pun..- 'eces, to be loaded with slugs, and the w arf and landing were suitably protected. Now the place is almost stripped. The great bulk of the stores have been shipped to England ; and what are left are the pro- perty of the Canadian government. The berths of the sailors yet remain with their sacking bottoms, though board shelves have been placed within manyvof them, the more conveniently to store away small articles. The Admiral of the station used regularly to date his official correspondence Ship Niagara, and the accounts of the Navy Department were kept with the same name. The oors were called decks, and the forecastle and quarter deck distinctions were rigidly kept up in this building in true naval style. At the present time a great deal of room in the frigate became available by the shipment of. tents and mili- tary stores to the various clmps, and thus it happened that the officers could avail; themselves of the conveniences abrded for giving a ball in camp. . Accordingly active preparations were made to lit up the ball room and other apa.rt-_ ` ments. The large room on the main deck. was cleared and decorated with ags and accoutrements in handsome style. The walls were entirely draped in ags and the win? dows cnrtained thereby. From the ceiling hung suspended the beautiful silk colours oi ~ the regiments in camp, and at the extreme end a collection of military articleshada striking effect. In the centre a pyramid bf drums decorated with flowers, on either . side stands of musketry and ` of swords, the kettle drums of the cIV.811'Y band and banners.
