The growing opinion that the weather in sere- ra! parts of Europe 13 continuing ttuf.M'0uruh|e to the growing crops has stimulated the market and nerved speculators to embark more freely than they have done since the close of business last fall. At the beginning of ill: Weeli the market was sluggish and drooping, but the re- ceipt of private advices by a few in the trade thrust them into market on Wednesday after Change, olfering we. to 20c. per barrel more titan could be procured in the morning. S_necu- I latora hl.'8 faith in higher prices based upon the presumption that Great Britain is likely to need much more than it was supposed she would at the opening of navigation, on account of the probable lateness of the harvest and chances of a failure in the yield. It is certain that through- out the Spring, and even now,_a great deal of rain has fallen in England and America, a cir- cumstance 'lllCh at this periodofthe year has a tendency to strengthen pfices. These features added to the fact that stocks are and have been very small at all points of importance in Britain give impulse, and cause a more pnimatel gmsr. ket throughout the world. The shock, however, on Wednesday was not `felt all over the conti- nent, which was somewhat singular, New York being quoted at 10c to 15-3. lower, while the West and our local markets were active at an advance. The tone of the English press in re`- viewing the prospects of the coming harvest is not encouraging, and we must confess that on this`Continent we have every reason to appre- hend a failing oifin some districts on accoun- if the wet weather which has prevailed. The condition of the market now proves:thnt it has been chi. r nwimr In tlm nknan...-. ..c...._.. .1 . nu uunul OUEII1 Exchanga-E 93 to 9%. ` P1-i1 ncl. m Au-:3, mm ouyers M104. -- City Bank-Has been sold at 98; and 98. The management had taken pains in arranging the various articles as efectively as possible, and their efforts resulted very sathfsctorily. In the ladies department the show was not quite so large as we have sometimes seen it, but every- ning present was very good, and almost the Whole of the articles had net`(`1' been previously exhibited. The judges, dlSl.fU5l- ing their own unaided ahifity to decide, called to their help the opinion of the judges of the other departments, who in turn called upon friends and amateurs present to assist, and a pretty se- vere ordeal the bread, cheese, honey and pre- served fruits had to undergo before El. decision was arrived at. It is the opinion of the writer, feelingly expressed, that each exhibitor in this department was richiy deserving ofa first prize. We suspect the ruunagers are guilty of a sly piece of humour in placing this exhibit in close proximity lo the ne art. dnffrnanl In this department nearly all the old exhibi- tr-rs came out in full lorco, and the show was remarkably good. In looking at Mr Sheldon s pictures one cannot help being struck with the rapid strides in advancement this beautiful art has , tnttrle during the last seven years. The last new ` style or picture, to which the name of Retnbrant lists been appended, are very beautiful, and the , depth of shade which distinguishes them, and 1 from which they derive their name, renders them very effective. Some bcsuzitul porcelain pictures, taken-by a process of Mr b'heltlon's own, were all deservedly admir- ed, and one of them, it nude infant portrait, both in position and effect, was a perlect gem The character of lhe material gave 3 softness and statuesque appearance to the picture, which was very charming A coloured porcelain picture I was much admired, but the light was too poor 1 for its full beauties to be properly seen. Mr Sheldon is particularly happy in hisaccesisories; the tires, the rustic stile and fence, and the dis- taut lake, make up a picture far in advance in this respect of the old stereotyped pillar and curtain, or book and table. Mr Sheldon is also fort-tnate in his staff of colourists, and some of his pictures by a young nrtist of genius from Montreal,connt.-cted with his estttblishntent, were very nely executed, while some large portraits beautifully stippled by a. lady's hand, were ob- jects of much admiration, and very doservecly so. in the other department of the fine arts . large crayon drawing of'Land5eet s Distinguish- ed Members of the Temperance Society,n large water colour landscape, and several small pencil drawing, were very nicely done, and carefully , manipulated.
