The enlargement of the foreign opera- tion: of the Mormons this year is 3 signi- cant fact, and one which enables II to form some opinion of the course they are likely to adopt in the future. \Vith the Pacic Railroad rapidly girdling the American continent and bringing the shores of the Atlantic and Pacic Oceans but wfew days npnrt, it is evident that the Martian: cm"- not much longer enjoy that isolation from of the world -hi.-I. n.-:.J i,...-.:-_ The Mormons are thoroughly -petition in the arts they make to Iwg,l..lhe1r num- hen by emigration hem Europe. They raise the money required to =pay the ox- pcnses o those who may be willing to come, and then send agents to Europe to nd persons who will be willing to Ittrt for Salt Lake on condition of hone their ex- penses paid, and of having a_ _ tter and surcr prospect of a in py spiritual life. The peculiar theories w ich make up the Mormon creed as it is put forth by Brig- ham Young, seems to be more adceptabls to Europeans than to Americans, and but for the emigration that has been nnnually received from Europe since Mormonism was started, the number of "saints in Brigham`: dominions would have been very much less than it is now. Mormon missionaries are constantly in England looking after fresh recruits, and their suc- cess among the lower orders of the British people has nlway.-3 been better than any- where else. Probably this is because the average condition of those classes is far less satisfactory in England than in Ameri- cn, and the advantages held out by the op- ponents of the Mormon taith are therefore more nttractive than etfective. Special efforts are to be made this year to swell the number of saints in Utah. The Mormon leaders are shrewd enough to see that the leading cartl in the game they are playing against the American Govern- ment is material strength. and hence they are anxious to swell their numbers nnd their strength as rupidly as possible. In order to carry out this enterprise the Mor- mons of Utah have been placed under tri- bute hy their President, and the latest in- telligence received from Utah states that $50,000 in money has nlready linen con- tributed for use in furthering emigration, and that large quantities of grain, cattle, and various goods sn.i products, have been collected for the emigration fund, but are not yet turned into money. And these contributions will continue to be made as long as President Young regards" them as necessary for securing the glory and W317` fare of the Mormon Thn nnlqu-nn.......s -1.` .L, I __-v u-sI%` "" ' 301:-mean 1.} 1;. pmuofz Irblitiuaxif P BASS, Q ouurwugox oft]: vorcn.
