'r.....,..... u Av cu!!- `.\'e have heard talk like this before, and from the same quarter, and it's amazing that it should be indulged in, considering all the facts of the case._ The tory press has often referred to the corruption of the Kingston liberals, but in not a single in- stance has the evidence of it been produced. There is on record, however, the testimony adduced at the trial of the Kingston elec- tion case, in which Sir John Maedonald was a respondent, in 1874, and a review of it is scarcely necessary in orderto show by whom the electorate of this city was most shame fully debauched. Some of the witnesses whom it was intended to summon to court made themselves for a season invisible, and one of them was the treasurer of the1:am- paign fund, the man whom Mr. Jus- tice Richards said did not take any steps whatever to prevent the improper expen- diture of money. Mr. James Shannon, the present postmaster and former gentleman in waiting upon Sir John Macdonald, swore that he spent $400 in the election, that he had received $1,000 from Hon. Mr. Patton, Sir John`s lawpartner, and $1,000 from other parties. He said he got $900 from Sir John personally, and without any in` structions as to what it wa.s for or to whom he should give it.` His memory was very treacherous while he was in the witness box, but he remembered giving 830 to one person, 3% to another, $l0 to another, $18 to an- other, and 3|!) each to two persons. 'lhe balance disappeared, how he could not even conjecture. Mr. Shannon was proprietor of the News at the time, and it is refreshing to hear that paper denouncing the bribery with which Sir John Macdonald was defeated. It is unnecessary to go over all the features which the trial brought; suice it to say that Sir John Macdonald admitted that he scattered among the electors 82,000 of his own money, and that the evidence disclosed an expenditure of upwards of 85,(l)0. Sir John Macdonald was in the midst of the corruption, and hence the judge said the petitioner was warranted in continuing the enquiry as to his personal complicity in it. \Nith this evhiliit hefore the people it ill-he. comes the organ of the tory party to cast reflections upon its opponents. Those whom it virtually adores have been provcn guilty of a scandal of which they ought to he, to t'ie end of life, most heartily ashamed. ` 1 oromo unouu.
