We were also surprised at the number stations and their neat end usty appearance. At a special meeting of the board. held on August l6th. and attended by professional men and repre~ sentative me'chanics. the unanimous opinion expressed by the resolutions then was that a direct connection with the apa- nee, Tamworth & Quebec RR. would be of enormous benet to the city. Walkem, presidcutof the Midland ("antral Fair association, gave a written statement in regard to the purchase of the new exhibition grounds and the formation of a joint stock company.` It was generally conceded that to make the exhibition a suc- cess in future, something should be done to encourage a larger attendance of visitors and to procure increased facilities for exhi- bitors and the public. Reference was made to the unsatisfactory way in which the pre- sent grounds are held, and the stops the society had taken to secure a suitable site. Land on the north side of Princess street was purchased for $3,500, though certain conditions were annexed that were consider- ed unreasonable and which are now sought to be rectified with every prospect of suc- cess. It was evident from the tirst, said the president, that it would be impossible to buy lands, erect buildings and carry on our exhibitions under our agricultural so- ciety, hence it was decided to form a joint stock company under revised statutes of Ontario. cap.
