WI] 0! grunts. l l'6VlOl.lI (O Hll Iuuluusulsu here be had recoivectbnt declined to accept, a call from Elizahethtown (now Brockvills) At the time of his settlement. there were only three Churches of England, six Me- thodist. two Baptist and `four Presbyterian ministers in Upper Canada, in which four years afterwards there were only two Ro- man Catholic ieete. After hiseettlement Mr. McDowal did not conne his labors to the township onthe hay of Quinta. He extended his labors from Elizabethtown on the east to several rnrles west or where the city of Toronto now stands. He. was tor years the only Presbyterian minister in this extensive region. through which his journeyings were v fatiguing and often perilous. He ad to tra- vel through almost unbroken forests. and to cross unbridged rivers. He had generally to preach and lodge in small log cabins, but _he felt that his bodily strength must give way if he continued much longer to labor as ho was doing. Therefore. in 1806 he made an earnest and pathetic appeal tor help to the synod of the Reformed Dutch church in the United States. Several missionaries were sent to co-operate with him in missionary tours and in the opening and organizing of sta- tions and congregations. One congrega- tion was organized in Elizabethtown (now Brockville) in 1810. 01 the conbistory or session of this congregation the tlrst presi- dent or moderator was Alexander Morris, father of the Hon. William Morris and the Hon. James Morris. The second congre- gation was also organized in 1810 in Little York by the Rev. John Beattie, whc is re- lated to have spent eighteen weeks on a missionary tour round lake Ontario. This was the tirst congregation or- ganizsd in which is now the city of Toronto. Including the congregations under the immediate charge of Mr. Mc- Dowell no less than seventeen stations had been established in the province of 0:1- tario previous to 1812. But after the war of 181215 these, with the exception of those under the charge of Mr. McDoivall, were quietly abandoned by the Reformed Dutch churoh.towhich it is proper to add, the deepest gratitude is due for their valu- able missionary labors continued at a time when there was most need. Had the Presbyterian churches in Scotland and Ireland exhibited at this early period simi- lar earnest interest in their co religionists and kindred in this oountr the Presbyter- ian church in Ontario an Quebec would doubtless have been in a more ourishing condition than it was in the early part of this century. But the missionary efforts of these churches were at this time chiey directed to the Atlantic provinces. Alter the war of 1812 15 Mr. McDowell withdrew from the classis of Albany and became a member of the prea:by- tery of Canada. which had been formally organized in 1818. This is the first per- .nanent1 organized presbytery in the ro- vinces 0 Ontario and Quebec. He a ter- wards joined the synod of the Presbyterian church of Canada in connection with the Church of Scotland which was organized in 1831. His name appears for the first time on the roll of this synod in the min- utes of 1837. He remained a member of this synod till his death.which occurred on the 3rd of August, 1841. in the seventy- fourth year of his age. In the month pre vious to his death the synod at Kingston resolved to present him a testimonial of high respect and esteem with which they long regarded him and hislong, faithful and devoted services at a minister of the gospel. and appointed the Rev. D. Mathis- son and Rev. Mr. Gordon to carry this re- solution into effect as they might deem suitable and becoming. The remains of Mr. McDowell are interred near the site of the old church in South Fredericksburgh in which he had long labored. Rninuhln addmnana Isms-A alsn mndn hv Gendron No. 25, $75 spt Cash.
