IIIFIIDF OI IUI UXIIlBllUU- Very little can be ascertained concern- ipg Buckley's earlier life. His criminal career. however. commenced while he was still in tender age. Petty thefts and mis- demeanors brought him before the notice of the officers of peace. and previous to his last imprisonment he had served short terms. His last oifence was committed |in the city of Toronto, when he. in a drunken t oi temper threw a woman down stairs, causing her death. That woman had been keeping house with him. and both being under the inuence of liquor. one night engaged in a quarrel. with the above result. For the crime the judge sentenced him to five years in the penitentiary. Th light penalty aroused the ire of the Toron- to people and their indignation became so marked that the judge was forced to recall his decision and increased. the term to f- teen years. He entered the Kingston peni- tentiar on Oct. loth. 1888. Buckley's counse at the time promised to intercede for his release at the end of live veers. and explained Buckley's good behavior at the institution during that period. But at the end of the live years no such step being gaken the expectant convict became careless. obstinate and al- most desperate. Hie conduct caused end- less trouble for the guards, and solitary connement was common punishment for him. His reatest act oi desperation was committed in the summer of 1896, whnn he combined his efforts with four other convictein an attempt to let lose every convict in the institution. This was at- tempted when he was in the solitary con- linement win . Had not one of the con- victs discl the plan great trouble and death might have resulted. At the lsllassizee he, with his companions, was tried and given an additional sentence. From that. however. Buckley is released. The strain of such a wild career had its attendant eifeots on his constitution. and ior the tsix months his quiet actions spoheo some physical ailment. Decline est in, followed with a drooping of spirits. During the last three months he rapidl wasted away. and death released his su erings yesterday. The oiciale re- port his conduct latel to becommendahle. and in his last hours e vs evidence of deep re ntance Since ll imprisonment his met or died. and it is supposei he has no friends.
