Another eccident occurred in dey or two leter, when en engine, tender end three cers went down into the Bow river while ettempting to cross en iron bridge thet was undergoing.repeirs. For seven days passengers going either wey hed to wslk across the river on plenksleid on top of the fallen bridge, while ell the beggege hed to be cerried across from trsm to tfein. Meanwhile spiles were driven elongside the wreck end the construction of e temporery-new bridge begen. At the end of seven deys it wes completed. This wee considered repid work, es the banks of the river on either side bed to be graded. The river is'two hundredgrds wide at the point where the accident occurred. Several fatal and disastrous railway .ac- cidents occurred in the vicinity. "This town was saved from being wiped out of existence by a dynamite explosion by the merest fraction ofachance. On a recent clear. frosty ni ht a west bound freight train was bsc ing on a side track, and had not quite cleared the main line when a. heavily laden eastbound freight train, going down grade at the rate of at least twenty miles an hour, crashed into the westbound train. Both engines were completely mocked, and all the cars forming the east- bound train were ditched and more or less dam ed. This is how the miracle hap- pens : In the first car behind the engine of the east-bound train were twenty tons of dynamite, and the force of the impact when the trains came together drove the tender half-way through the dynamite- laden car, scattering the explosive in all directions. Strange to say it did not ex- ' plode. due to the fact of it being in a frozen condition. Quite a portion of it was ground as fine as our. and the oldest in- babitant is still conjecturing as to why there was not an explosion. I view- ed the wreck next morning. and saw the boxes containing the dynamite smashed into match wood and their con- tents crushed as though they were tsllow oindles and thrown into the mix-up with a shovel. The tender forced its way rightup to the middle of the car, until it almost blocked the doors on either side. The col- lision occured 150 yards west of that sta- tion, and right in the heart of the city. Had there been an explosion. no doubt all the principai buildings would have crum- bled into the cellars beneath them. and the leaf of life would have been frightful. accident occurred a dim nr sum A.
