Wmn reporter this morning : I see that the water works committee has recommended and the coun- cil has adopted the recommendation that no person not connected with the stall` of employees at the water works pumping station shall be admitted to the station on any pretext or under any circumstances. The alderman. apparently, have forgotten that the taxpayers of this city are the peo- ple who will have to pay for the new pumping engine and who hear the expense of running the entire de- partment, pumping station included. It seems strange that people should be pro- hibited lrom inspecting the machinery bought with their money. Suppose I have a visitor from Montreal, Toronto or Ot- tawa, who expreesee a deeire to see our pumping plant. I cannot take him to the station to do so unless I first obtain a per- mit irom the chairman of water works. and I may have to teeroh for eeveral hours be- fore I find him. What harm would it do, I would like to know. to take a visitor through the place? No person is likely to interfere with the pumping machinery. It in too dangerous a matter. I think the prohibition is, In this case, entirely uncall- ed for." WUIIO lllillllg WWII IIKIU Ulll, I16 NIIIXZ I cherish no peeeimintio views on the tomperange question. We are making progress, sure prom-eon, though often alow. or c an we wouldlike and expect. Every step is a step forward; every enactment ie a movement in advance. A- to. the legis- lation of the present time we had expected more in view of the plebiscite. the pro- miaee made and the christian and tem- perance integrity of many of the noble men of parliament, and I still hopehe will secure more. We. however. Ihould have noeympathy with the whole- sale denunciation. of the men and party which we have been hearing, as if` every principle of right had been sacriced. and men of character and honor had sold them- eelvee to the liquor truic. . It is much eaeierto agitate than to legislate. The amendments. while they reach not up to that which we would deeire. claim a certain meaeure of commendation.
