It will take some time, a couple of weeks at least with expedition in the case. But the enquiry ehould be thorough or not at all. So much talk hae been made about the subsidies to the Drummond county railway, about the euepleion of their having been diverted to purporee other than those which they were voted. that nothing ehould be omitted that can bring out all the facts whoever, or whatever government. they may affect. He probably does not; he is angry with the liberals, because they are in power, and he is angry with the con- spirators in his own party who pushed him out oloice and consigned him to ever- lasting obscurity. The committee has been appointed; now for the evidence. Meanwhile parliament will mark-time, and mark-time only, since it has completed its work and only awaits the good pleasure of the senate in order to prorogue. A WIDER CURRICULUM. Mr. Whitney, the leader of the opposi- tion, has been talking again. He has re- sumed his tour of the province, in the in- terest of the toryism which he leads in the legislature. One of the subjects which he treats somewhat gingerly is the school curriculum. This he wants widened. How? He does not say, and he will have to be specic. If he wants more studies added to the programme he will have to advocate a longer school day since it is absolutely im- possibletocrowd more work than is now called for into the ve and a half hours per day, less the fteen minutes morning and afternooniwhieh are allowed t e pupils for recreation. There: is a disposition on the part of some persons interested in educa- tion, well meaning persons, to falvor the introduction of fads into the schools. No one can object to what is calculated to develop the pupils mentally and physically and add to their usefulness in after life, but there is a limit to the work in the schools, and only that should be undertaken which is essential, which is indispensibly neces- sary, and the foundation of all education. The essentials must not be neglected on account oi any accomplishment however worthy. The tendency of the department now is to widen the curriculum too much, to overload it, and Mr. Whitney wants that thing carried to still greater ex- tremes. Ifhe knows how the curriculum can be improved, in any particular, he should state it, and then people will know what he has in mind and what he is talking about. The complaint of the people, and of some true- tees as well, is that the education of the children in the public schools is being somewhat trilled with, that the subjects on which they should be most procient are weakened by the fact that the time they demand is not spent upon them. Mr. Whitney surely does not want an enlarge- ment ol this experience. If he does he is seriously astray, and the sooner he is side- tracked the better. .-j.:-?:- DISTRUST OF AMERICANS. Chauncey M.
