There has been a meeting wf the board of trustees and action was taken instructing the faculty to enforce literally and strictly as well as impartial- ly an old standing law of theirs. which seems to have been entirely forgotten, that no student shall be allowed to bring into the college or keep in his room any spirit- uoue or. fermented liquors, nor shall he frequent nny place where intoxicating liquors nre sold as a beverage. The manager of the inn has been notied to close his urill-room and thus put an end to what the great body 0! the Presbyterian church considered a pub- lic scandal. \l7I.....L-_ .n .L_ . -I -I 1 ans won a good deal of excitement among the friends of Princeton, the great Presby- terian university of the United States, over a similar cause. It appears that for some time past the "Princeton inn. a regularly licensed public house, has been kept open near that institution and depending largely for its patronage on the cilicials. friends and students of that well-known university. So much has that been the case that the inn has" generally been closed during vaca- tions. A few months ago the New York \'oice.a leading American prohibition jour- nal. published ythe fact that a number of the leading professors of that univerisity were signers to the application for a liquor license tor that inn. Among them were some well-known ministers in the Presby- terian church. Possibly this custom had prevailed for some years. but it` had not been generally known to the pulilic be- fore. 9 No sooner were these names made pub- lic, however, than the excitement began. At first attempts were made to minify the matter by claiming that the inn was not a regularly conducted liquor shop, with a regular bar, that it only had agril|~room for the special accoinmodation of its guests who might come from a distance to the university, and of its more advanced stu- dents, who would thus be kept from the downtown saloons. Some of the lead- ing church organs also tried to smother the matter down. Vbut in this they failed. So much interest was excited that leading New York and Chicago journals sent their special reporters there to ascertain the true state of the case. Some of them carried awa llasks of liquor procured there. One of t iem had a codac snap-shot taken of that "grill room. which appears to have differed very little from an ordinary lirst-class bar. except in -"Wm "."C'_l.i_,?OZ`fS and syuods all over the country began to express their disap- proval of the whole matter in strong and unmistakable words. The synods of no loss than fourteen dillerent itates to lunch action. So strong became the feelihqg that the Rev. Charles W. The Montreal Scar is a news- paper of this description. It contrnated the expnndicuroe of`U.1tario for he present your wnh those of the sister province of Quebec in an interesting manner the other day. Said this conservabive contempor- arv : <- uuuae no are not assume the functions of Providence and prevent the outbreak of hog cholera at the Plumber piggeryl In 1894 there was much loss to the do- minion because of the prevalence of viru- lent disease among cattle owned by Gann- da at the experimental farm. Surely when the minister in charge placed the uianagernent of the pig- gery and of the outbreak in the hands of the most ex'pei'ieneed vetenn1r_y surgeons in the dominion, with orders that the pub- lic interest should be the one point to be aimed at, he did his full duty. The government of Ontario. even by the con- tension of many 0! tliozo who have enter- tained conservative views with regagd to national aiiams. is able to present a iecoid thatthe opposition nds it hard to combat. This view is strengthened by the attempt which Mr. Whitney and his hsaociatee have made to get away from their past declarations on the slump, allowing can- vaeaeu to privately say what they deem it bad policy to aliiun H) public. They are pursuing the opposition policy of i394, but not on the platform, and they hope by this hide-and-ecek expedient to win votes that would be against them werethoy at all time: open uud ubove board.
