Mr. Tisylol- s Question Bald to Have Been I (mo of the Most lmpertlnont Ever Asl- od In ParlIament-`Ihe Details An Laid liars. OTTAWA, Feb. l5.-In the house yester- day Mr. Borden replied to_ Mr. Taylor s long question about the removal of the drill shed at Gananoque from the site sold to the town for the purpose of a high school. A new site was purchased for $2,500. After detailing the particulars of the arrangement the minister replied to the inquiry whether the new drill shed site had been purchased from J. B. Turner, that it had. He had not H inquired whether Mr. Turner was the defeated candidate for the house of commons in the general election of 1891, or if C. E. Britten, from whom a warehouse wasrented,wasacandidaloin1882 and 1887. In answer to the query. Was the renting of the `warehouse from Mr. Britton and the purchase of the drill shed site from Mr. Turner toin partrecoupthem for election expenses ? the minister re- plied ; "I am informed by Col, Lake,quar- termaster-general, that both matters were recommended by the district officer com- manding and himself, without any sug- gestions from the department or out- side, and without any knowledge of either Mr. `Britten or Mr. Turner s po- litical opinions. From the inception of the negotiations, which were begun in 1891 95, between the town council of (lananoque and the late government. as a result of which the country has been com polled to buy a new site for a drill shed there. one George Taylor, of Gananoque, seems to have taken an active part therein. In the autumn of 1896 the said Taylor strongly urged the purchase of the J. B. Turner lots, claiming that the late gov- ernment tsd through a former minister of militia, committed the country to the pur- cnase. He requested me to write tohis honor the governor of Manitoba-who was the former minister referred to -for conrmation of his statement, _ which I did, and, in reply, re- ceived a practical confirmation of the said Taylor's statement. In view of said Taylor s presumably intimate lrnowled e of the matter, I respectfully refer t e member of South Leeds to the said George Taylor for information as to what disposi- tion J. B. Turner may have made of the purchase money received by ,&him." For the further information of the house he read a letter just received from Mr. Turner. in which it was stated that on the recommendation of Mr. Taylor. the late government had agreed to purchase the very site which has now been purchascc for $2,500 for $6,000. In face of this fact that the site has been p`.nChIBOd for $3,500less than the price which he had recommended, Mr. Taylor's question is one of the most impertinent ever asked in parliament. BUT THE LIBERAL GOVERNMENT ONLY PAID $2,500. 3000 'rwA0000 $0,000. ]'1`neLBlackstone Cigar Factory, Montreal. BLACKSTONE lot cum; ot lorjoty. u I-5 I . 1!- J-_I__.I J. The visit of the minister of militia to Kingston was an absolute departmental necessity. not suggested by any Kingston liberal and not known to them in advance. His chief concern was regarding suggested improvements at the military college. in- volving so much expenditure that` consul- tation and inspection of the premises were necessary belore Hon. Dr. Borden could present and defend the estimates for it. His inspection of the drill shed site and of the barracks and Murney tower were all in connection with improvements aulred for by Kingstoniane in the public interest. But the Binythe party must attack him for endeavoring to meet the wishes of the citizens. They would sooner see Colborne street closed, the drill shed delayed, the military college unimproved than that any attempt to give them should he made by a liberal government. It is very poor policy for a Kingston part to attack King- ston's interest. It is a out equal to an Ontario opposition helping to roe Ontario of part of its timber territory. Wolfe lslnud Donnell.
