Amidst the roaring wheels of the world's industrial machinery human life is momentarily crushed out of existence. The hand ol time awaits not to lend willing aid to the suffering and mangled. but steadily moves ahead to mark the second when the next victim of late : unrelinquishing clutch passes to the unknown clime. Every hour, day and weekadds to the ranks of those who have gone before, some ushered to the luturelife by soothing wordsandlamentation of lriends.others hurled to meetwtheir (iod without a moment's warning. To the friends of the latter death is the severest of masters, crushing beloved onee beneath a load of sorrow which cannot be shared in sympathy. Immediate death through ac. cident is probably the most lamentable, as lamil_w_ ties are thus severed without a parting word. The sorrow which accom- panies such atlliction is of such a depth that prollbred 1-ympathy can scarce tlnd place in the burdened heart. An accident euual in conditions to that place in the burdened neart. An accident equal in which occurred at the Montreal transpor- tation company's new elevator this morn- ing cannot be found in recent records of Kingston : history. One moment the workmen are plying checrily at their trades and the next moment sadnees clouds their faces. one of their comrades having been dashed to death. The awful thought is hard to realize, but such is into. Life. active and energetic in incessant toil, and a moment later it in known no more. T. company's elevator has progressed in its erection so far with a few trivil accidents and mishaps and it was hoped that its complelicn would be secured without injvies of a serious nature, but apparently such was not fatds decree. When an accident was least ex- pected. then it was the crash came. Tim dreadful accident was but the result- pected. then it the crasn came. The dreadful of a mis step. William Newman, an old but reliable workman. was engaged with other carpenters near the to of the elevator. which towers hig in the air. A scaffold attached to the front elevation of` the structure sup- ported the men at their carpentering work. Little they thought that death was near one of their number, although two or three warning words were casually uttered by lnmn nr them. Work went steadidly nn warning words easuauy uwereu uy some of them. Work eteadidly all morning until about 11:30 o'clock, when Mr. Newman. wrapped in his work, stepped too near the edge of the scaffold, and. losing his balance, dropped into midair. The scaffold stood between 140 and 150 feet above the ice. When their woik-mate slipped over the edge, the men were startled by a sudden cry. They dropped their tools and stood a moment in breathless silence. and then shouted to workmen below. but the unfor- tunate man came crashing on the logs be- neath before those below could realize what was wrong. The descent of the falling man `was ver rapid, and in fallinu such a distance hie lvsreath was almost cut from him. Being of a fairly good weight, he fell with a heavy crash, which brought al- most immediate death. In the front. and at the base of the elevator. a wharf has been partly built, the cribs appearing above the ice to the extent of two or three legs. At each end are driven down several spiles. with a grillage formed on top to support towers for the elevator lope. On one of these tower foundations Mr. Newman fell. but before he reached the hard substance. he struck a board which lay across the new deck timbers. That board was in- stantly broken in two. and the helpless {oi-in crashed to the hard foundation. Many willing hands rushed to pick up the apparently lifelees body. and John (laskin. jr.. telephoned for Dr. T. M. Fenwicli, who hastened to the scene with all possible spwd. It was e\pected that life would be extinct and the body mangled when it was picked out from inside the crib. but a heavy gasping showed that.theinan still lived. lie was placed ina sleigh and driven to the shore.
