Mr. Macgillivray spoke hnielly of the progress the parent society had made since its formation in l804. `ht this time the scriptures were only circulated in about 40 ililferent languages. During the past. ten years the society had issued the bible in ltiti ditierent languages. It has been well said that the work of the British and Foreign bible society keeps page with the bounding. throbbing energy which characterizes the ninetecnthycentury. He pointed out that the wort done by the society was of the very highest order, and that the bible had been sent to the people in all heathen lands. There were foreign lands now opened to them by commerce, and they should see to it thst the people were first put in possession of the bible before other systems of religion are taught them. They should show more enthusiasm and liberalily in the worltyof the society than they had evinced in the ast. This was a grand mis- sionary age o the church, and the people should make the scriptures as accessible as possible to those of heathen lands. The bible was the most wonderful book the world had ever seen. and it is the most won- derful bleaslng given to mankind. They would find upon reading it carefully that it was more oharming than any novel that has yet been provide-l. It is even more pleasing to read than Robert hllsntere, or any book which creates a furore for a short time and is then relegated to the shelf. R.u- Mr Walker. in a sari able address. Joseph nawueu.
