March 19. - Inspector Byrnes saii last evening: "Within the past two weeks Aldlllll Jaohno has confessed to me, on four dierent occa- sions, that he was bribed to vote for the Broadway road, and also for the other railroad schemes. He confessed in the presence of witnesses. How 1 induced him to do this matters not. In confess- ing that he had been bribed Jaehne thought he had the best of it. and that he was not getting himself into any trouble. He must think diiferently now, and by this time appreciates the trap 1 led him into. He will be convicted be- yond doubt. as the evidence against him is perfect and conclusive in every re- spect. He did not confess to me through love but through fear." Lawyer New- couibe said the story that Jeanne made a confession that he and another alder- man had taken a bribe was an outrageous falsehood. Inspector Bvrnes would have to take the responsibility for circulating . the falsehood. Surprise is expressed by an official of the court of general sessions that Jaehne has been arrested so soon. Minister ol Militia, continuing his speech. He spoke until 6:30 p.m.. strongly de- fending the execution of Riel and criti- cizing the attitude of those former sup- porters of the administration who had turned against them on this question. Mr. Deejarilins followed his speech with a temperate review of the case and an elaboration ol the argu- ments in favour of the resolution. re- gretting that clemency had not been exercised. He strongly contended that there was no question of race or creeds, and that the French Canadians desired only to sp cal to the reason and sense of justice 0 the other nationalities. Mr. Landry (Kent. NB.) recognised that the arguments presented in the house in favor of the resolution were lair ones. and temperately put, but he could not see his way to condemning the govern- meut for the step taken. Mr. Guay followed in French. upholding the reso- lution. mainly on the grounds taken by the former speakers on the same side. Mr. Molntosh moved the adjournment of the debate, and the house rose at 12:25 s.in. 7 ~ --oo-~--~- i I . D siuer the electric light question. Mr. K. 1`. Wslkem. Q.C., speaking ol the pro posed action of the corporation in ar- ranging for the use of electricity. says that if the gas company is deprived of a considerable amount of support it cannot carry on its business. In years past it was able to pay the stockholders our and ve per cent. but last year it aid nu dividend. The amount of money invested is large. about 8100.000. for plant and machinery, and the stock- holders are mostly citizens. so that it would be hurtful to the city it the gas company were obliged to close its works in consequence of the general substitu- tion of the electric light for gas. If the lighting of the city is to be successful it must be in the hands of one concern, therefore, if the city makes contracts without considering the position of the gas company, it will choke off one of its industries. deprive many men of em- plcyment. and render incalculable in- convenience to the public. The com- pany. however, are willing. with fair inducements, to take up the electric light question. and, if found feasible, purchase plant and machinery. "In regard to gas." said Mr. Walkeni. "the company and the people have ii common interest in it ;the more gas manuliic- tured the cheaper it becomes. and I think by a more general use of it the point might be reached at which gas could be supplied very nearly as cheap as coal oil. The company have plant and machinery sufcient to supply the whole city with gas. II the people and the company could be brought together so as to secure the taking of gas gen- erally. the results would he benecial to everybody. The problem. however. is how can this be effected ?" 635 ll0lIOI' CBDIIGI on u|auIlII Iloluzn.
