Thelife ofthedeparted iltho ` senree whence the historian dliva much of his inlerniatien in his attempts to races trouobliviea the oeeerrences, ` the inanners and customs of the ages led. The thought of the individual is inevitably the I-ivnlat which swells into the breed and deep national mind, while his purpose is that which nally becomes the pulse of the nation, so that while the nation imparts qnalitieato the man, he in turn leaves the stamp of his individuality indelibly written upon theages. And as truly as nations spring from the indi- vidual, so does ustional character: hence in the study of biography we obtain a clue, if out a distinct insight, into the causes of the rise and fall of Empires, the elements of national prosperity or de- cline, the secret of reconstruction or re- solution, and the law by which entire chaos may be reduced te perfect order and tranquility; so that biography is not simply for the study of character only, but a nger-touch by which to feel the pulse of the world. I`hen, too, the va riety which biography presents invites you into every walk of life, frem the loftiest genius and meat magnicent resi- dence to the commonest walk and poor- est lint, from the most defective and erring course to the most christian life, showing the excellency of virtue." For example, in the lives of noted warriors, scientists and artists, as well as of poets, philanthropists and christian teachers, we are presented with the varied subjects which make up the biography In the life of Paul they were awed by the man- tery of the theologian; the life of John presented the amiableness of the gen- tle christian and the life of Stephen the heroism of the proto-martyr. While the field was large it was benecial and salu- tary. More could be learned from ex- ample than from preceptive utterance. The most impressive of all teaching was the exhibition of consistent goodness in its simplicity and individuality. While the general characteristics of the race might be somewhat uniform, yet, there pertained to each individual souie dis- tinguishing shade of character, or diver- sity of talent on which they might with great advantage reect. Wherefore, in studying the individual they should con- template every aide of him; the man- ward and the God-ward; the outer as well as the inner life. The great limner of the Bible had portrayed our hero true to the life. As they traced the thrilling story of the proto-umrtyr, they might pause to catch some thoughts for reflec- tion and emulation. How abruptly was Stephen introduced to them, and how concise the account respecting him 3 There was nothing circumstantial or min- ule in the narrative of hie birth or al- cestry-his early training or social ad- vantages. But as a token of his well de- veloped iuoral manhood he was chosen one of the first deacon: of one of the first churches in the Apostolic ego, and no sooner was he introduced than they be- held in him a preacher of extraordinary zeal and success. He proved to he a powerful and eloquent eontrovertialist, and in his disputations with the Jews, on behalf of Christianity, finding they could not gainsay his argu- ments, he was dragged before the Sanhedrim as n disturber and blasphemer. If it were not for one grand feature is] eharacter, preserved by the sacred pen- man,the story of his life might end there; but one most beautiful picture had been given, from which it was quite possible for any serious-minded man to admire his nobility of character. He was a man `full of faith and of the Holy Ghost. Was not that enough to deck the character in the richest drapery! It told that his life, though short, was full ; though brief, it was sublime. What matter though his ancestry was poor, and his origin obscure, fer lofty aims and a true heart coma nutof ancestry. These may indeed be the characteristic features of the iadividual, but the manhood which impels them to come, not of blood and sires,;but from the generous pulse of an inner life with God. It was one of the most pleasing features of the age that ` `rue intelligence so longer asks for a relic of royalty or a trace of nobility as a passport to eminence or distinction. True merit was the claimant now, and the age in which they lived delighted to An Ili n.-.i nlnnn ;. i.,...... 1.. .5. III III! III wulcu Luv uvuu uuuguuzu vv do it honor. Mr. Brock, who preached arichly Evan- gelical discourse from the aecunil verse of the Httth Psalm. An excellent emigre- gatiun was present in the evening, when the Rev. Mr. Jollifle discoursed on Num- bers iii., 48: And he stood between the dead and the living, and the plague was stayed." There was trouble in the camp of Israel. Instead of being grate- ful to their divinely app inted leader for the sacrifices made on their behalf, and the sublime patience he had manifested `in all their rebellious conduct, they charge him wlth lurding it over them," and bringing them out of Egypt to die in the wilderness. At length the long-su'er- iug of the Almighty was exhausted, and three separate judgments fell swift and fatal upon them. The last was the plague everywhere through the camp; death was reaping an abundant harvest until nearly 15,000 died. Then Aaron was command- ed to take his censor and to rush in be- tween the living and the dead, and the plague was stayed. The preacher said the work of Aaron at that time represents the work of the minister nuw. When ever he atziutls up to preach the gospel he llllntll between the living and the dead. The Bible declares that the unssred soul is dead. Sin has killed it. The plague spread everywhere through the camp. Sin is in be found in all countries; it has blighted. blasted and cursed the mural universe. Aaron`s position was I re` spousible one. So was his as n niiiiister. In view of the value of their souls, mid thetrsuiendous realities of the judgment day he dare not be recreaut to his trust, or unlnitlifiil to his duty. The cure for the plague of sin was found only in the blood of ii crucified Christ. The rapidly revolv- ing years were carrying them forward to judgment. Were they ready for it? There vverejust two worlds, and in the one or the other of these they would soon be foniid. lf they were to go to heaven preparation must be made here and now. The plague in the camp affected only the body,l>ut the plague of sin s'ects l)OY.ll body and soul.
