Gardiner, D.O.C., at the same time the artillery commenced firing their salute. Widows and Persons Incapacitated May Benefit. ys Ottawa, Jan. 9.-4t is understood that the minister of militia is giving some thought to the question of whether €r not it is possible to grant some assistance to the widows of of - ficers, non-commissioned officers and men from Canada who lost their lives in South Africa. If fmancial aid were gran it would not be a pension, but" would take the form of a gra- tuity, and perhaps might also apply to those veterans of the war who are incapacitated by injuries received in active service from earning a liveli- hood. The question cannot be said as vet to have taken definite shape. It has simply presented itself for consi deration. A matter of this kind re quires to he carefully studied. Darl Deed Committed By Ghouls --Cut an Iron Bar--Bodies Dragged on The Ground. Caretaker Lawless, of St Mary's cemetery, received a shock this morn: ing, upon visting the vault, in find ing thet during the might thieves had of the dead and removed of three women. After sotisfying himself that the i had not left any trace behind o'r identity, he did not jose time in coming into the city and making known the affair. Police constable Snodden, with con stabs Craig and Megarry, visited the scene of the desecration me diately after the aflair was reported to chief Baillie. Afier looking - over the ground they found traces that convinced them the deed was confmil- ted by four men, three heing employ ed at the vanlt whie a fourth remain od at the rig and as isted in helping lift the bodies over the bar ed wire fence and into the sleigh. The police traced through the snow for up wards of bali a wile the tracks made hy the ghouls in dragging the three bodiss from the vault, to the sleigh. Along the route the police found pat ebes wi heir that nad been torn from the heats of the dead. Where the hodics were hois'ed over the wire fence, they came in contact with the barbs and pieces of fosh were {eft hanging on the gharp points, along with leeks cof hair. The police say (hey are convinced that the bodies are not at Queen's college, though thev night subsequently find. their way there, ------ A Visit To The Vault. A Whig reporter, this afternoon, vis ited the scene of the gruesome mid: night theft. it required only a glance to discover the means by which the sacreligious ghouls gained admission to the vault. The small window on the north-west side, was minus one of its iron bars. There are four of these windows, small and heavily barred, that admit light to the solemn cham ber of death, serve ventilation purposes. One "of the central bars in the window men tioned was sawn smoothly off a few inches from the | bottom. Being loose at the top, it Yes easily removed. The bar was a thipe-quarier inch steel one. To accomplish this purpose the wooden stretcher, that stood near by. Once the bar was removed, 'it was an easy matter to force open the small window and gain admittance. The rob- bers must have been experts at their work, because they did not even break the glass in the window. Caretaker Lawless admitted the re- porter to the vault. There, ranged in tiers, row above row, reposed in their narrow homes the rentains of sixteen persons. Of these the ghouls took three. The bodies were each relieved of their shrouds and other burial clothes, and these were carefully put back "in their respective coffins and the lids loosely returned to their place, It must have been a difficult task get ting the bodies through the narrow shelved to the window. Once outside the window the bodies were evidently placed in a linen bag and dragged behind the robbers, as the marks in the show would indicate. On the barbwire tence, that skirts the western limit of this white-mantled city of the dead, are indications of the spot where the bodies were lifted over into the broad stretch of meadow be yond. Pieces of frozen flesh and par ticles of linen still adhere to the barbs of the wire. Inside, the vault was left in an or doily manner. Neither were there any traces leit behind that would give a clte to the robbers. They were: ex ports, and did their nefarious work well, Margaret Hughes' remains wore od in the vault on December : hs Matilda Cropley's on Neyymbe . The other bodi & had not hen touch: ' ed, Caretaker Lawless réported the mat- ter to Archibald Hanley, secretary treasurer of the board of directors of the cemetery. He in turn informed Dr. Rvan, chairman of the board, who visited Queen's college, but did not find any trace of the body there. Archbishop Gauthier and Rev. Fr. Kehoe were informed of the regretted oceurrence and they drove out to the cometery this afternoon to view the work of the ghoulish visitors. Mr. Hanley says the board of directors will push the matter to the very end in an attempt to learn the identity of the parties guilty of the crime and punish them for i Miss Matilda Cropley hailed from Ottawa, She died at Rockwood hos pital for the insane, where she had heen-a patient for a long period, on Novembor 29th last, her body being placed in the vault the day following She was aged about forty years, As to Miss Margaret Healey little ean be learned. Ladies Competing In Public Swimming. London, Jan. 9.~Last summer the question whether ladies should swim races. in the presence of men was ex discussed, . with the result that in September, for the first time in the history of swimming, ladies competed 'in public for a recognized championship race, when Miss A Styn, of Brighton, won the 100 yards championship of the Southern coun ties' swimming association. There were some, However, who disagreed with this decision, and recently the vexed question was again raised al the annual council meeting of the { southern couaties' association, when a proposal was madé that in future the ladies' swimming championship of | England should be decided in the pres ence of none but ladies. It was urged by Frank Sachs that under the pre i-vailing conditions a number of ladies who ofjjected to the prepence of men wore debarved ftom competing, while Mr. Styn, father of the southern lady champion, opposed this argument, and gave several instances of ladies having improved their éwimmiog through be ing enabled to swim in the presence of men. A letter was also read from the Portsmouth ladies' swimming club in favor of competing before men. When put to the vote this proposal was lost, thirty-nine favoring the presence of {| men and only eighteen voting for an audience of ladies only. Former Canadian Officer.
