Philadelphia, Jan. 18.--On the even- ing of February 15th. Walter W. Bell, only survivor of the "Last Man Bro- therbood," will stand at his own table in his own diningroom, alone. The table will be set for thirty-three diners. But when aged Mr. Bell shall lift to his lips the Naderia wine that he, with thirty-wwo others, bottled just forty-six years ago, there will re- spond to his toast only the soundless voices of thirty-two impalpable pres ences. Kvery other member of the brotherhood has died. Pittsburg, Pa., Jan. 18. Gambling is alleged to be ruining of scores of well-to-do citizens of Beaver Falls, Pa. Fuchre parties are said Ww be the subject oftdiscourse to the ex- clusion of every other Jub ct, and number of merchants profession- al men have revolted. The mien first went to justice Wil- liam Piper and asked that wirdants be issued for the arrest of the leading socidty women of the town, some of them being Spartans enough to in- clude the names of their wives. They said the prize winnings were dragged into .the church to the ex- tent that one-half the congregation was at loggerheads with other, and all kinds of charges were being made of cheating al cards to gain a miserable prize. They also said they were being impoverished by their wives in having tg put up for these prizes, They declare théy got no more cook- ed dinners, the children were neglect od, and the town, if roofed, would be one big gambling house Justice Pipdr dissuaded them from making informations. They rned to representative W. H. Bricker and re: quested that he present an act to prohibit card playing for prives. He told them there was such a law on the statutes, but the penalties were too severe, and be favored passing an act with a nominal fine and an impri- sonment of twenty-four hours or so against this form of gambling, which, if enforced, would break it up. ------------------ Missed Eight Years. Philadelphia, Pa., Jan. 18.--A hear ing was had in-the probate gourt to- day and testimony taken in order to wind up the - estate of Joseph A. Sloan. The case of Mr. Sloan is one of mystery. He disappeared in Aug- ust, 1898, shortly after his wife's dAétiy without any apparent reasom, and although diligent search was made, no trace of him could be found. Recently the mother of the absentee died, leaving a large estate to the ab: sont man and his brother on equal terms. To-day's hearing was had for the purposes declaring the absent man legally dead and making the proper disposition of his estate and also that of his mother, Invited To Negro Congress. "Jan 18 Mrs Christine Bauman, of William street has come into possession of a large estate, and quite a large sam ol money from a brother named David Craig, who left Elisabeth twent years ago. Mrs. Raith was in a critical condition Saturday night, and when the army started singing and playing instru ments close to the house, members of the family told the soldiers of Mrs Raith's illness and asked them to de sist. 1t is charged that Capt. Kisson who was in charge refused to discon tinue the singing. Mrs, Raith was disturbed and complained of the noiwe. Her husband appealed to the police. Toronto, Jan. 18.~A Vietoria, B.C., special to the Globe says that Joseph Martin announces that he will again sock the sufirages of the peoples of Victoria this time for the commons The reason given in the despatch for Martin's action is the refusal of the liberal executive for Victoria to be dictated to by him as to the date of the meeting to name delegates for the provincial liberal convention at Van couver for January 30th. I8.--~A spe cial from Astoria, Oregon, says "Prank Rakowski, a soldier in the United States army, was to-day de graded at Fort Canby and sentenced to 'en years' tmprisonment in the military prison.
