Offers Made For the Apimals--Al- dermian Harkness Wants to Purchase the Crey Horses-- Will Not Sell Grey Team. A special imerting. of the civic com mittee on fire and light was held in the rity engineer's department Tuesday aiternoon. Thuse attending were: Alds. Bull, chairman; MeCammon, Ring, Farrell, Harkness and McFar lane. Chairman Bell announced that he found it. necessary to call the members together to obtain perpiission to sell the two horses of the fire department, which it had been decided to disposa purchnse of two horses, but had not authorized the sale of any end as tabling accommodation was not obs tainable until some of the animals wore disposed of, he asked that the necessary authority be given to sell the two horses recommended to be dis posed of. The sub-committees having the matter in hand had been approach: od with offars, but had not the power to well. Ald. King thought it would not Le wisd to dispose of the old horses un til the new team had been purchased. airman Bell replied that one would-be purchaser had made an offer forSthe "Bob" and "Tom" horses, and promised to allow "Hob" to remain for one month at his risk, man had been offered 8163 for the team of « greys, #40 jor the "Tom" horse and $125 for his mate He had also been offered $80 for "Tom" and "fioh."" The speaker had tried 'to lave the figure raised, but did pot succeed. On motion of Ald. Harkness, chair man Bell and Ald. McFarlane were ap pointed a sub-committee with power to sell the two horses in question to the hest advantage. It was also decided to retain the "Bob'* horse until a new team is pur chased. Chairman, Bell stated that the vet erinary surgbon had said that the ick grey horse was in bad condition and even though it reggovered, it would he unfit for fire Artment purposes ft was desirous that the animal should be disposed of as soon as pow sible. ' Ald. Harkness was of opinion that the grey horse would come around JI right with care. He once had a horse that was much lamery than this animal, and' it recovered; he would dot how take $2.000 for the animal. As an outsider he would give 360 for the grey horse and run chanves; he did not want the horse for himsélf, but for a Wolfe Island farmer: his of fer was 810 better than any the com mittee hap vet received. : Chairman Bell asked Ald. Harkness to make his offer 875, but the big 1] lon ward alderman said 200 was his limit. Ald. King was impressed with . « happy iden; would it not be wise to advertise for tenders for the purchase of the hovses 7 It might prevent the .ommittee being. unfairly eriticised. He moved a resolution along these lines, which was adopted, Aftér further discussion .it was sided not to entertain any offer for the second grey horse, though chair man Bell pointed aut that a matehid team would sell to better advantage. It was decided' that the other grey horse could be put to good use by the fepartiment. ) de 3 "Peg Woflington." In these days of the costume pldy there is great rivalry among the lead: ing stars of the stage to secure a story of dramatic possibilities which will best display' their peguliar . tal- ents. This season Eugenie Blair bas undoubtedly carried off the theatrical palm in distancing ber many rivals and presenting the very first produc tion of that strong and beautiful story, "Peg Woffington." The drama tization which Miss' Blair presents was adapted by Wendell" Allison Hobart from Charles = Roade's noted story. The dramatist has followed closely the lines of the novelist and an admirable play is the result' Misa Blair sup porind by the lasgost and strongest company she has ever had, will pre sent "Pog Woffington'" in this city at the Grand on Thursday next. ! & vr Ha ! The first game is to be played in Toron- to. A sharp contest is being waged in the New York state senate over the bill 10 prohibit live-bird shooting con tests. During the discussion it was stated that 20,000 pigeons were killed at the Syracuse tournament, Physical director Bews, of the ¥. M. C. A., has received word that the Watertown, N. The previous mark for the garden was 6.03 flat, held by John Jobmson, who defeated Harley Davidson in a two-mile race. "Capt. Scott, of the steamer Per sin," said a prominent marine man this morning, "has been boasting about his skill as a euchre player. Now he may be "considered a crack player out in the suburbs of Rideau ward, but when he gets down town, among the smart set, he wouldn't be in it for a minute." Deseronto and Napanee hockey teams met at Deseronto on Tuesday day night, in the Quinte distriet ser ies, and the home team was awarded the victory, There was a dispute over a ruling and Napanee left the ice. The score was three to two in faver of Deseronto, and the game was award ed to the home team. R. Mills, of Cueen's refereed. In the interest of Kingston, the rink authorities will have to hoard the sides of the spectators' platiorm, sur rounding the ice, so that there will be no chance of interference with the players. Unfortunately, the space for spectators is very limited, the side platforms being two feet narrower than three years ago. More gallery accommodation must be afforded for the big matches. Schooley, of Toronto, gives his op inion to the Toronto Star ahout the Frontenac-Cornwall match, and says either team will have to improve 100 per oent to equal the Wellingtons. He critictzes the rink for not having its sides boarded, to kéep the crowd from tumbling on the ice. Mr. Schooley makes a very strange statement, when he says that spectators grabbed a stick from a Cornwall player: Such a thing never occurred, If a Toronto referee desires to score a place, he might at least tell the truth. Frontenac hockey team left for Mor- vishurg this afternoon, and will meet Coruwall to-night.
