The Earl of Ava Was Unveiled by Lord Minto in St. Bartholomew's Church on Sunday--General Capital Notes. Ottawa, March 25.-1t is learned that the corohation contingent from Canada will be 33 strong, represen tative of every braach of the militia The force will be cdmmanded by a lieutenant-colonel, who will ave un der him two majors, with adjutant and three officers for each 100 men, It is not unlikely that the contin- gent will start from Montreal about June ldth, which would give them ample time to reach London, as the coronation does not take piace until the 26th of that month. The minister of militia, with Mrs. Borden, will visit London in a few months and may Jeave for the other side towards the end of May. Following are the school teachers selected from eastern Omtario to im- part instruction to the Hoer children in the concentration camps of South Africa : Miss Lavina odger, Miss Georgia A. Grant, both of the Ot- ! tawa normal school; Miss Lottie E. | Bleakney, Cooper street, Ottawa; Miss Libbie Rodgers, Middleville, Lanark; Miss Florence H. Randell, Ottawa; Miss Julia Urquhart, Ottawa; Miss Sarsh E. Drysdale, Perth; Miss Annie Moulton, Gananoque; Miss Ruby M. Rothwell, Ottawa. In St. Bartholomew's church, on Sunday, lord Minto unveiled a tablet erected to the memory of the late Ar- thur, earl of Ava, son of lord Duffer in, who was morfally wounded at Waggon Hill, in the Transvaal, dur- ing the last campaign. This is the third tablet erected in St. Bartholo- mew's chureh--one to lord Ava, one to corporals Irving, Thomas and Brady, who fell at Paardeberg, and one to Mrs. Sfevenson, an aunt of lord Ava's, who died on board ship while coming over from England in 1885, It is reported at Ottawa that an other contingent is fo be sent to South Africa. It is understood that at an early date, probably during the coming summer, & school for instruction in signalling will be established in Otta wa. Col. Pellatt, of the Queen's Own, probably will receive the offer of the command of the coronation contin pent. ." - r Lieut. Col SHEET Weighes is cvadit- ed with having made an offer to the minister_of =atlitia to raise a contin: gent of 2,500 mén to go to South Africa to help to finish the war. The strike among the umion tailors will probably be settled to-day by the men accepting a. compromise. They made thirty-nine demands upon the merchant tailors, thirty-two of which were conceded. A compromise will be made about the others gnd the men will probably be at work to-mor- row. Seventy-five are out on strike and this is the second day. Miss Lily Fraser. daughter of Joh Praser, Maria street, and John P, Dickson, secretarv-treasurer of the Canadian railway accident insurance company, were married here to-day. Mr. Dickson is one of the best known and most popular young men in the citv. He is a first class bowler and hilliard player, and a prominent mem ber of the O.A.AA ENDED HER DAYS Starvation The Only Hope--Death Preferred. New York, March 25.~Crazed by months of grief for her husband and confronted with starvation for herself and family of five children, Mrs. An- nie Lukaes, of Belmgnt, ! , killed her infant, by throwing it into the deep waters of the Passaic river Wed nesday night and then hurled herself after the child, ending her own miser- able life. At her humble home, four children, from two to ten years old, waited in vain for their mother to return. Their cries aroused the neighbors, and one kind woman stopped at the howse to enquire the cause. The absence of the mother was reported and the Passaic lice were notified. Then it was rned that the mother had kissed her little ones good-bye and told them she was going to see a doctor. "I may not be back; she said, "but be children." With a ing kiss eft them, taking with her ber six-months'-old- infant. The father OPERATIONS HUNG UP Uhtil Boer Generals Are Through With Conference. London, March 25. Secretary war Brodrick's statement, mn the house of ¢ommons, yesterday, that Schalkburger had asked and received conduct through the British lines and back in order 10 see Mr. Steyn, is the only solid fact that bas transpired in 'four hours in connecticn with on of the Boer leaders. Ru- speculation, and opinjons make the rest, and nope carries con . The Chronicle says that it of ates and lord Kitchener, at was of the briefest and most Jormal character, Mr. Schalk burger and his colleagues simply re portiflg thémselses to the british cominnder-inchief and then proceed ing southwards to Kroonstadi The exact place of the weeting between ex president Steyn and Dewet and the [ransyaal rejgesentatives has transpired, but, uniess altered, it is to be somewhere in the Keitz district, where the members of the Free State executive 'have long found shelter While She negotiations are in progress there Will be a complete cessation of host All oftensive operations againsg Dewet, Delarey and Botha, will bung up, and the three prip: cipal er generals have, on their pars, aged to honorably armis gates," before committing to a sbdond meeting with Kitchener will acquaint Gen. Delarey will. be vigorously and uninterrupted ly pushed, It adds that there is a tendency in certain military circles to evince sispicion of the Boer move. The Exghange telegram company claims to Bave the highest authority for stating that Mr. Schalkburger, acting president of the Transvaal, and commandants Lucas Meyer and Krogh came into the British lines in accord- ance with an arrangement sanctioned at last Friday's meeting of the Brit ish cabinet. Lord Kitchener had an interview with Mr, Schalburger, but no important step was taken in the direction of peace. There is, however, an unmistakable impression in official circles that the negotiations may have a satisfactory termination. The Pall Mall Gazette says that the arrival of Schalkburger and others at Pretoria seems to signify that the Boer government has had enough. It thinks, however, that neither Delarey nor Dewet, whitever Botha may do, will be bound 'by Sny terms that Schalkburger ahd his colleagues can possibly obtain from the British gov- ernment. The day : St. James Gaveite says to- "We are ii a powition to state has received official Boer. a. Cen. sent more than one conimupication on the subject." Condition Satisfactory. London, March 25.-The war office has received a despatch, from Johan nesburg, announcing that the condi tion of lord Methuen, wounded in the fighe at Zeibosch, is satisfactory. A member of the South African constabulary has written a private letter declaring that men who, having surrendered to the Boers, have been sent back stripped, are compelled to pay for the horses, saddles, rifies, and ammunition The writer adds that the commanding officers are complaining against this ruling, and say that the effect will be that the men will shir their duty rather than be captured, if they are to be fined so heavily. Going To Kroonstadt. Wolvehoek, Orange - River Colony, March 21.--The train having on board acting president Schalkberger, and his party, passed this place on its way to Kroonstadt, yesterday. The Transvaal government officials were accompanied by Capt. Marker, lord Kitchener's aide-de-camp. and five other members of the British com- mander-in-chief. The impression here is that the Transvaalers favor a gene ral surrender of the Boer forces. GYPSIES ACQUITTED. Were Not Guilty Fortune Telling. Torohto, March 25. Georgina Chili- cotte and Annie Young, "Royal Eng lish Gypsies," wer ced on trial in the sessions, yesterday, charged with fortune-telling. The complainant was stafi-inspector Archibald and the wit nesses were constables Thompson and Irwin, of the morality department, who had visited she gypsy camp, and, in consideration of twenty-five cents, cach had their palms read. Judge Macdougall, 'after heaging the evi dence, took the case. from the jury and ordered a verdict of "not guilty b to be returned.
