The Sight Unnerved Stokers-- The Bodies Buried at Sea--The Stowaways Were Negroes. New York, May 3.--When the British freight steamship Sir Richard Gren- ville, from the West Indies, arrived in port Capt. Jones reported the tragic death of two West Indian stowaways. The vessel stopped at ball a dozen West Indian ports, among them be ing St. Lucia, where she coaled. It is at this port Capt. Jones believes, the stowaways, who were negroes, manag: ed to get aboard the vessel by lot ting themselves down to the coal bunkers through the coal chutes. The men had evidently miscaleulated the time the steamship was going to re main at St. Lucia, and did not know the vessel was to coal. After they had reached the coal bunkers, many tons of coal were- taken aboard, and. the two stowaways were literally buried alive, tus he Nothing was wn to the captain or ---- the death of the men until the morning of April 18th, after the vessel had left Guantanamo, loaded with sugar for New York, when one of the bodies slid through the coal chute into the furnace room, while the stokers were piling coal into the for- naces, and while the vessel was mak- ing a hard fight ageinst a northeact- erly gale. The sight of the body sent a shiver through the stokers, causing them to quit work temporarily. Captain Jones ordered the body buried in the sea. Six days later the stokers were hor- rified by apother body which came through the coal chute into the fur nace room. A search was than made of the coal bunkers, but no more bod- ies were found. ARE NOT REVERENT In Seeking to Find Out What is Sold. London, May 3.--Somebody wrote to the archbishop of Canterbury, re cently, pointing that his words in an address some time ago that, "In the next 200 years we should do more in preaching the gospel than has been done in all centuries since the Lord gave up his life on the cross' would likely be understood as implying that the Lord would not return within 200 ears. The archhishop replied, through his chaplain, that he knew absolutely nothing of the date of the Lord's return, but that he would re turn he had no doubt gt all, although he did not know when. His grace thought it most reverent not to speak as if he did know, but to be silent on, the matter. His grace did not think that those who tried to find out what the Lord has told us we gre not to know are as reverent as they ought to be. MAKE TERMS OR FIGHT.
