Princip] Grant's condition changed early this morning, evidences of oe dema of the lungs developing. This was the filling of the system with perus fluid. He sank rapidly and died at eleven o'clock. His Life Briefly Outlined. Principal Grant was born on Decem ber 22nd, 1535, at Stellarton, (Albion Mines), a village situated on the East River, county Picton, "Nova Scotia. His father, a native of Scotland, taught 5 school the village where the distinguished principal was Lorn and reared The family removed to LVicton, and young George Munro at- tended the académy of that town. It is said he was not remarkable ° for close application to study, but that he could master his books with very little difficulty. . "He wis," says an authority, "fond- er of play than of his lessons, and al- ways rendy for g scramble, or a holi- day, or a fight at 4 moment's no- tice. He was ambitious and pugna cious, and had several 'perilous ad ventures, such as do not commonly fall to a boy's lot. Un one occasion he was thrown into the Easteriver, at Pictou; by a big boy with whom he had been fighting, and to whom he refused to acknowledge himsell beat: en. His antagonist left him to scram- ble out of 'the river or drown. * * * He and some of his play- fellows, for the miere Jove of mischief, were ex- perimenting with "hay cutter, in the absence of is owner. Young Grant's hand was caught by the knife and completely taken off. The deprivation never seriously inconvemienced him, and he was often known to say, 'Ido not know what I would do with a second hand if | had it." He bore away the Primrose from the Pictou geademy. In his sixteenth year he entered the West River seminary of the Presbyterian church of Nova Scotia, Necpiving his instruction in classics and philosophy at the hands of the able Prof. Ross, afterwards president of Dalhousie cal- lege, Halifax. He ined in the seminary for two yell, and was elec ted by the commitide of the synod of Nova Scotia as one of four bur wars to be sent to the university of Glasgow, to be fitted for the ministry of the Presbyterian church. Just as he attained his eighteenth year he proceeded -to Scotland. His career at the university was charac terized by singular success. He took the highest honors in philosophy end also carried off fast prizes in classics, moral philosophy and chemistry, and the second prize in logic. In addition to this splendidly ac- hieved success, principal Grant began to give much attention to public and literary topics.
