TELLING THE WHOLE TRUTH. Mr. Poster, the most discredited po- litician® in Canade--a veritable politi cal wanderer and outcast--has had the nerve, in Toronto, te criticise the Ross government. The burden of his talk was that wrongs had been committed in certain elections, and that the of fenders had not been punished. "Not one," and he, "has paid the penalty of his erime." Where has Re been living or hiding that he does not know, sud has wot heard, about the men who were re sorted for election offences and sen- tenced to pay heavy fines or, in de fault, go to gaol? It was a liberal government that called the transgres- sors to account, and so made the at- tempt, honestly and earnestly, to purify the politieal atmosphere. If "not a man" has been sent to prison the conservative party is to blame. They had the famous Pritchett in their clutches. They induced him, under the promise of non prosecution, to put false statements in an affidav- it. They refused to use the warrant which they. carried to Dewroit, where Pritchett was staying. A second war rant could not be issued. So Prit chett returned to Canada to cheek out his scandals, and hear himself called by one judge "'a self-convicted liar." The fore, shown corrupt campaign with a bad man, for political efiect; and to have shield ed him from the gaol to which be should have been sent. "I," says a eritic, "any one has reason to hang his head with shame in connection with the Pritchett business, it is Mr. Whitney and his tory friends.' The next time Mr. Foster goes to the "noon day prayer-meeting" of his party he had better tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. conservative party is, there to have entered into a a -------- A CONSERVATIVE'S REBUKE. (na of the sharpest rebukes which the Whitney party has received comes from a political, alley, A. G. Davies, for time connectegt with the Brockville Times, "The greatest some mistake made by dhe conservatives during the present campaign," he says, "is their eriti- cism of the government's pulpwood policy. The advocates of a policy similar to that in, vogne in Quebec will find little sympathy with their ideas in northern Ontario, where the conditions are known The conserva: tives took great eredit to themselves for forcing the Ontario government to stop the export of pine logs from the province, and, certainly, let the credit be whose it may, everyone who knows the north shore of the Geor- gion Bay will admit that enforced home manufacture put new life and energy into that section of country. Why, theft do the sonservalites vocate the policy for pulpwood which was condemned by them for pine ? The owner of g pulp limit in Quebec may export his logs to the United Staies, or he may let them stand for wn years, till be gets ready to sell them. No one has aathority to force trols the whole territory which he fils hand. More than that, he tro's the whole territory which he 'bays, and within ite limits may work his own sweet will, no one daring to molest or make him afraid." Mr. Davies shows that he is familiar with the business by discussing the value of the pulpwood when cut for export, as it is in the province of Que- bet. "The pulp companies pay to the governw ht," he remarks, "forty cents per cord. - The wood is worth at mar- ket price in Northern Ontario from $2.75 to 83 per cord on the cars. Sup posing the Sturgeon Falls Pulp Com: pany had the privilege to ship the ad con ter paying the government dues they would have $2.60 for taking it out, driving it to Sturgeon Falls, cutting it into four-foot wood and loading it on the cars. WHITNEY IN HIS PLACE. The meeting in the City hall Thursday night was small enough be a party caucus, and the message which Mr. Pringle delivered was very confioential. Tt was in effect that the opposition, with a persistency that knew no failing, had been struggling with all the great public issues, for thirty years '--and that. 4t had heen inimensely successiul. The heard something that before, but Mr. Pringle came the way from Cotnwall to on to like all emphasize electors the point and give it due importance. The liberals had and most of the voters thought prop erly, with developing the plans which meant the progress and prosperity of Ontario. But Mr. Pringle declares that it's all a mistake, that Mr. Whit ney and his bosom Triends, the gentle men composing the inner circle * of the vonsrvative party, have been doing the hard 'thinking, and have been evolving the ideas that found expres sion in the acts of the legislature, "There are some men who will doubt the usefulness of the opposition even yet, who will reason that Mr Pringle is considerable of a romancer, who _ will feel that the conser vative party is hard up for light when this talk is all it can afford. What, go for another thirty vears, for ever and for ever! Why not ? It would be an awful pity, a sin, a scandal, an outrage, to disturb the good work in which it is engaged. 'The implication was that there was great extras agance. The reply of Mr. Fielding was more effective, though Mr. Tarte, following Nr. Hagart, said some sharp things. Mr. Fielding said the increase inthe expenditure, outside of that in the Intercolonial railway, the Lost office, and the Yukon district, was very moderate. The trade of the country was booming, and this was shown by the fact that the 'expendi ture in 1505 was 194 per eant. of the trade, and in 1901 it was only 15 per cent, The debt had been increased during the eighteen years of conser: viative government at the rate of $6, 563,000 per annum, while during the period of general rule the increase had been hut $1,996,514. Moreover the débt had increased in greater ratio than the population.
