On Friday evening last a large pumber of 'people, representing the various congregations on his circuit, assembled at the parsonage of Rev. J. C. Cornell, Elginburg, to bid him farewell aftefighis four years of fruit ful labor wmong them. The people had asked that he remain a fifth vear, but conference decided it would be batter to send him to Oxford Mills, a larger and more prgsperous elreuit. Bailey, another of the street railway con ductors. charged with robbing fare boxes was, this morning, committed for trial on the evidence of Pinkerton aetective Caulfield. Caulfield swore that he saw Bailey take money out of a fare box with a "digger," also that on May 21st, Bailey told him he had a good day and got about twenty tickets. He, Uanifield, udder cross-ex- amination, admitted that he had a "digger" for the extraction of fares and had pretended to use it, bat de never taken anything out with it. The men threaten to have Canlficld arrested for participa tion in the frauds, The Presbyterian general assembly this morning confirmed the action of the preshyteries, a majority of which had voted disapproval of the proposal to appoint elders for a term of years insteau of for life as at present, The assembly finally sanctioned the pro- posal to reduce the membership of fu ture general assemblies from fourth of the ministers and elders to one-sixth, The principle of raising a fund for the travelling expenses of the assembly commissioners was approv- ed, as was the proposal to appoint an assembly commission which shall act under certain circumstances as an ex- eeutive, \ General manager Keating and a committee of the street railway em- ployees went into conference early this morning and discussed the dif fences between the company and the men at great length. Robinette, counsel for Fred Lee Rice, the murder of county con stable Boyd, visited the prisoner at the jail and informed him of the su preme court's decision. Rice took the intelligence stoieally. "Too bad, but it can't be helped," was all he said. A very close watch is being kept. He is still hopeful that the minister of justice will commute his sentence. one A BAD LOT. Members of Chicago Gang Get Penal Servitude. Paris, June 16.--"Eddie"' Guerin and George Miller, Chicago, wer sen- tenced to life imprisonment at penal servitude, and "May Churchill," known as "Chicago May,"' was sen- tenced to five years' imprisonment. When the verdict was pronounced May Churchill threw her arms around Guerin's neck and kissed him passion- ately. The guards separated them and led the prisoners away. Guerin and Miller were arrested in Paris last summer, charged with hav ing entered the offices of the American express companv, in Paris, in April, 1501, and stealing 30,000 francs (86, 000), The Churchill woman was char: ged with complicity. Wales, who rode to the saluting point, accom- panied by the duke of Connaught, and a brilliant staff composed of se veral Indian princes, the military at- taches, lord Roberts, the cgmmander in-chief, and the headquarters staff. Queen Alexandra drove to the parade ground in a closed carriage with the princess of Wales and the pr ncess Vie toria. Over 32,000 rain-soaked troops marched past the heir to the throne. Mayor Cochrane Wants the Poor Looked After on the Corona- tion Holiday--The State of Affairs on Stock Market. Montreal, June 16.1. McNicol, general' manager of the C. P. R., and Mr. McHenry, the new chief engineer, have returned from an inspection of the Ontario division of the road and it is announced that the work of re ducing gradients will be eommenced at once, Mayor Cochrane states that if the city is to vote money for the observ ance of coronation day he thinks the poor should get some of the benefit, something on the lines of the big London dinner to be given to the poor of that city. His idea to charter a steamer and give the poor an outing on the river on the hol day. At the same time he does not oppose some money bei voted to entertain the military which will vis it the city on that day. Notwithstanding the strike prospects Toronto rails firmed up on the stock market to-day, after being as low as 1182 on Saturday. The stock opened in 'the dealings at 119 to which point it had recovered at the end of last wegk. In the subsequent trading the price recovered a full point. Canadian Pacific was strong at 1863 to 137, but later lost hall a point. The rest of the list was uninteresting. 1s At The Police Court. The police magistrate spent about two hours this morning hearing evi dence in two cases of assanit. A young citizen preferred a charge against a Princess street merchant, who laid a counter charge against the young man. The case against the merchant wae dismissed, and judg ment against the young man was withheld. A case of infraction against the health act, preferred against a resid ent of Alfred street, was withdrawn. The funeral took place this morning of Agatha, youngest daughter of Capt. and Mrs. Murray, Clergy street In 8¢. Marv's cathedral g solemn re quem mass was celebrated, participa ted in hy a large congregation of mourners. The remains were laid to rest in St. Mary's cemetery. The late Miss Murray had just reached the es tate of womanhood. She possessed a charming disposition and had a wide circle of friends. For upwards of a vear she hore with christian patience her illness and when the summons came she was prepared to answer its call. Elopers Not Caught. The police vesterday received com- munication from Alexandria Bay, N Y., asking them to keep a look out for an eloping couple, were sup- posed to have taken passage on either the steamers North King or Toronto The couple bailed from ge village near Alexandria Bay. Old Forge, Pa., June 16.--A desper- ate encounter between a score of des puties employed at the "William A" colliery, of the Lehigh and Wilkes barre company, at this place, and 200 armed Italian strikers, occurred at eleven o'clock last night. At least twenty shots were fired, but so far as Known no one was hirt. His Death Expected. Thomas Sullivan, of the Clarendon hotel, to-day received tidings from Belleville to the effect that his broth erindaw, B.
