Spoke of the Generall as a Model Eng- Decoration or Rank Could Bestow--A Brief and Modest Reply. London, Aug. 1.--At the dinner giv- en in the Whitchall rooms of the Hotel Metropole; last evening, the occasion being the presentation of a sword of honor to Lord Kitchener, the guests numbered over 200, including Gens. lan Hamilton, French and Brabant; Sir Wilirid Laurier, prime minister "of ('anada; Mr. Barton; prime minister of the Australian commonwealth, and Mr. Seddon, prime minister of New Zealand. "The sword, which was given by cor- poration of Cape Town, was hande to Gen. Kitchener by the lord mayor, Sir Joseph Dimsdale, on behalf of the donors, - Sir Joseph said "that the people . of the-empire had watched with admiration Gen. Kitchener's: in- flexibility of purpose; his unswerving ardor, and above all, his absolute justice. (Cheers.) | He stood out be- fore hts countrymen as. the 'model of an Englishman, and - that would be to him a higher title than any dee ration or rank that coula be conferred upon him. Upon the conclusion qayor's speech, there was a 'scene of Ss the guests rising and waving their hand- of the lord Kitchener's health with enthusiasm. Low and" prolonged cheering greeted the guest of honor as he rose to respond, Gen. Kitchener said he wished could adequately © express his grati- tude . for the great 'kindness with which the lord mayor's far too flat- tering remarks had been emphasized. He had already expressed" to the mayor of Cape Town, and to the peo- ple, his thanks for the beautiful sword which he had, in anticipation, regeived in Cape Town., He wished to tender to those present, representing South Africa, his thanks, and to ex- press the confident hope' that in South Africa, at any rate, the sword would not be again drawn from its seabbhard. When many interested in South Africa met together, all thoughts were on him who had heen left at the helm. (Cheers.) All had confidence in Viseount Milner: (Re- newed cheers.) All realized the difh- cult work He had before 'him, and all had confidence that he woula accom: plish, his task. He was convinced that the better Lord Milner was known, the more his great abilities would he apprecinted--byv all - sections of those who pow recognize him as their ruler, to Gen. 20 / ---------- CANADIAN CUSTOMS. Are Being Robbed Wholesale by Chinese. * Vafwouver, Aug. 1.--The Canadian customs is being robbed wholesale hy Chinese! Oriental steamships, it is be- lieved, have brought large quantities of goods in the shape of silks, liquors und cigars, that have been successiully smuggled off by: Chinamen and stor in Chinatown. A .waggon load of liquor and cigars was seized on Wed nesday by the customs and the house of the driver was searched, when a great quantity of smuggled goods was unearthed. It is learned in official circles that the impression is that smuggling on a large scale has been carried on. by Chinamen. Some years ago a 'con- spiracy was unearthed hy the cus toms. It consisted of Chinese mer- chants having false. invoices sent. from China on which Chinese would pay customs. The true invoices, however; would by privaté mail. od come MOB SHORTENS HIS CAREER. L.--Wkhen the clerks. book-keepers "and. Other patrons of the quick lunch rooms in the town- town districts of New York had sa- tisfied the indeér man with the usual mid-day repast, to-day, they were pre- sented with pay checks which 'were five or ten cents in excess of the usual amounts. This was a result of the combination recently formed by the re- staurant proprietors to control pric- es, which became efiective to-day. Stapie dishes, such as ham and beans have begn raised from ten to fifteen cents, and the prices of sandwiches, cakes and the other articles of food usually found on the lunch counters have been increased in proportion. The proprictors justify their action on the plea that it "was made necessary by the increased cost of meats and other supplies. Invesugation, how- ever, fails to sustain the truth of thia statement. On Park Row, opposite the post oflice, stands a modest little all-night "beanery," which; despite its apparcit: fisighftiicance, is one of the best known places of the kind in the metropolis. The founder of this place retired some years ago after having made a fortune of $500,000 froin the sale of beef and beans at ten cents a plate, and the present proprietor, who refused to enter the new combine, says he expects to emulate the example, of his predecessor, 'and that, too, with- out any increasing of prices. There HAZARDOUS EXPERIMENT. To Subject King to Fatigue of Coronation Ceremonial. New York, Aug. 1.--The London Tri- bune's cable says! Optimism regarding the coronation is slowly reviving un- der effects of the surgeons' bulletins and forecasts from. medical journals. Whether the king's will is imperious or medical advisers consider it necessary to humor: him, there is a determin- ed efiort to subject the patient, who is barely able to make one or two turns on the deck of the royal yacht, to the efit and fatigue of the coronation ceremonial. Motives of state. prevail although an ordinary patient would not he. fit for so hazardous an experi quent in a few weeks-after.a most se- rious operation. The fresh forecasts of cabinee chang e8, now appearing in print, are clear- ly premature. The premier will not trouble the king with political. busi- ness until the coronation: anxieties are over. The education bill, moreover, a harrassing subject and sufficiently engrossing to the prime minister who 18 compelled to deal with the mal- contents on his side who are suggoest- ing a fresh compromise by which an effective public control of the schools shall be exercised when local taxes are expended. is VICTIMS OF CHOLERA.
