Clergyman Who Rigidly Enforced Prohibitory Law. . Portland, Me., Aggust S.--The Rev. Samuel F. Pearson, the prohibitionist sheriff of Cumberlanfl county, who was elected! in 1900, rigidly enforced the prohibitory law, and was a candidate for reclection in September, died at Poland Springs, yesterday, where he had been ill four weeks. Rev. Samuel IF. Pearson was a cler- 'oyman of only local repiitation until he leaped into prominence, two years ago, through his unexpected election as sheriff of Cumberland county, Me., tof which Portland is the most im- portant part) by the prohibition par- tv on a platform of strict enforce- ment. He lived up to his pledge, and devoted himself to the task with all the spirit of a fanatic, and the enerey of a man who was ready to sacrifice his life, if necessary to the success of his endeavor. He met. with a large deoree of success, but he had been much saddened-of late months by seri- ous charges of corruption against his deputies, which seemed to have some foundation in at least one case. He had not been in robust health when elected, and the strain upon mind and body was too severe for a weak con «titution to endure. He had been no- minated for a second term, and his dying wish will be respected, that his party should take a trusted deputv in his stead, but <the campaign be- comes a different thing when this fiery spirit disappears. aver------ THE SECOND RACE.
