Accused Never Winched --Prisoner Sent up for Long Term for Misappropriating and Misap- plying Funds. Detroit, - "Aug. 19 ~Judge Murphy L 1 Franck C. Andrews, Piound guilty, Saturday, of having mis- applied and misappropriated funds of the wrecked City Savings bank, to fifteen years at hard labor in Jackson prison. He had previously refused to grant Andrews bail, pending the set- tlement of the bill of exceptions which his attorney will fyle. An. exception to the ruling oe bail" was taken by defendant's attor- nevs and it was: announced that they will leave for Lansing to apply to the supreme court for a 'writ of error on this point. Andrews never winced when sentence was pronounced. He was tak- en back to jail immediately : A few months before the crash came which swept away his fortune and left him in a felon's cell, Andrews was one of the richest and most" men in Detroit. He lived in magnificent uk in a house. on Woodward avenue which cost him $100,000; he was police commissi- oner, he owned stock in half a dozen banks, in" several electric railroads, and in numerous: valuable properties; was the vice-president' of the City Sav- ings" Bank, dontrolled a leading news- paper and was the « trgasurer of three trolley lines. i Within six months lie had lost every farthing of his wealth, and to feed his passion for speculation' had robbed others of nearly £2.000,000, © Andrews' the proverb concerning the beggar on horseback.- He was born about thirty vears ago in the little town of Rom- ero, near this city, and until 1890 his ambition had not enabled him to rise above a clerkship in a country store. In 1890. he came to Detfoit with $3 in his pocket and secured a job as a clerk in a real estate firm. His push, his tireless energy and his inordinate love for work won him quick promo- tion, and at the end of his first vear of service he had $3,000 in bank. Then he went" home, married his sweetheart and veturned to Detroit to begin "real work." At the end of two vears An- drews had' cleared $26,000 and was «till winning. He was placed at the head of the loan department of the real estate firm and began his third vear-in-Detroit as a full partner in the house. In 1895 the rising young and financier first felt the sperulation which was ultimately to prove his ruin. Thus far he had wise: ly invested his savings in hank stock, and was now a power in the financial world of Detroit. His fortune waxed «and larger, until in 1900 he had acquired so much of the stock of the (ity Savings Bank that he succeeded in wetting himself" elected vice-presi dent. The president of thé bank was Frank C. Pingree, a brother of the late Hazen Pingree, but the actual management of the institution was largely in the hands of the daring fin- ancier from Romero. ~ Andrews had by this time proved himself a successful speculator; and he was open in his advocacy. of that method. of getting rich. Ie speculated het on stocks with the coolness as was generally he- prosperous capitalist fever of lar freely. of a veteran, and, lieved, won some millions in his ven tures. But the day on which he was drawn into the betting on Amalgam- ated Copper stock was the beginning of his downfall. an The banker played copper. heavily, and by degrees he adc led propery af ter property to the burning pile. "His railroad stocks went, then his real es tate. then his home-thén his stock in the banks of other cities, -and finally 'he saw ruin staring him in the face. One day in January last President Pingree took a little trip to New ou to be gone a week or so. The firs dav that Andrews was leit alone 4 overdrew. his. account at the bank for &1.,000,000 and cashed worthless cheques for $600,000 more. but the Then came the e splosion, buoyant young financier did not seem to care. He was cheerful in his »risoa cell; and didnot worry about the mean things said of him in the pap ors. Although he had many friends he fore_his. fall it was -only with the oreatest difficulty that he secural hondsmen for the $10,000 at which his bail was fixed. eee Married At St. George's. = At ten o'elbck this forenoon Rev. 6G. l..
