The luck seems to be with him too, as was instanced in' last Wednesday's match, when he won his own game by a little hit which scored two runs. : A fault of the Ponies is that they do absolutely no gymnastic exercise to keep themselves in playing form. LOTHROP STARR. ----t Cultivation of a Wholesome Pride --DMake City Pure and Free of Vice--Items of Interest From the City Pulpits. 2 In St. George's cathedral, yesterday, Rev. G. Loihrop Starr preached: at both services. In the morning his sub- ject was The glory of = the 2noun- tains," and in thy evening "The glory of the city." In his evening sermon, he referred to the great increase in cities thé world over. For, although, every healthy man loves 'the country with its pure air and inviting sur- roundipgs, the city with its din of traffic, its Smoke and pungent smells has a. peculiar fascination. Violet ~ Sullivan held her birthday party: on Friday -vening at the home of her parénts, Wellington street, and a very enjov- able time was spent. About fifty-two of her young iriends were present, and spent the --¢vening in-games and music, both vocal and instrumental. The little hostess delighted the com- pany by her beautiful playing and singing. Prominent among the guests were Rev. D. Laing and the Misses Laing. Music was furnished in the carly part of the evening by the harp played by Frank Otto. Later in the evening music was furnished on the piano by Miss M. Kane, which render- ed the balance of the evening very en- joyable.. ~The presents were numerous and ¢ostly. Tea was served at hali-past ten o'clock, the dining-room being beautifully decora- ted, violets being in evidence every- where. So that everywhere the progress from barbar- ism. to civilization is marked by the increase of the = cities.® Within the modern city, the speaker said, were many things the good God never in- tended should be there. Customs which alienate men from simples tastes and pire. living; conditions which often make the city the forcing bed of evils But the city is here to stay ancl ats evilsare problems to be solved by christian men and women. The prob- lem was a serious one. The preacher suggested, as an &l the cultivation 'of a wholesome pi in one's native town. He was im- pressed with the pride Londoners had in London, but one had only to spend a day on a 'bus top to realize its serious problems. But he believed Londoners" love for London would sane it. Unseliish desire to improve would lead them to cope more ecar- nestly with its vices and with the de- sive, God would-provide a way of es cape. The problems of London are only those of every city on a lesser scale. Their solution lies in a muni- cipal patriotism based on the teaching of Jesus Christ. To create this our towns must strive for more commun- ity of interest; public unselfishness among all classes, ra wholesome inter- rest in the government and improve- ment of our towns. The municipal re- forms of Joseph Chamberlain had done wonders for England. What he maintained was that no man had a richt to, ofier cheap criticism 'or, be little municipal institutions without doing something to improve them. The speaker showed that no honor was too great for men who enter city councils and with loss of time and loss of money and heaps of abuse, de- vote themselves unseltishly to' the city's welfare. : Wr. Starr then compared Paris with London to show the evils of handing the reins of municipal government in- to hands of professional mhanagers. Auplying it to Canada, he said com- patisons 'were odious, | but oftimes wholesome. 1f Canada is to be preserved from a provincial spirit it must be by profiting by comparisons. Where dis- tances are great between towns and cities as they are with us, there is lost that wholesome spirit -of competition in making the most of them,- an in- clination to let well enough alone. Kingstonians had much to be proud of and mo one could visit distant lands - without realizing he wasy a 'citizen of no mean city," a citv which numbered among its' sons many decided the standing. To-day Ponies and Gananoque again contest at Lake Ontario Park, and is quite likely that] the former will win, pulling down Ga- nanoque's lead. Ponies lost Saturday's match in the first -two innings, Antwerp getting four of their five runs. Barr pitched r the home team, and although Po- ies hit him more freely than Ant- Aerp hit Moriarity, they failed = to make their hits when there were men on bases. It was an unfortunate loss for the Ponies. The Canton-Gananoque match of Fri- day, which the latter team won, has been protested, because Barr pitched for Gananoque, while a member of the Antwerp team. A player in the St. Lawrence league cannot play for two teams at the same time, though he may sever his connection with one, and fin another. The protest can be decided only in one way--in favor of Canton. . L It is likely that Rochester will see a race between two crack schooners for the Fisher cup this fall. Negotiations are pow in progress between the Roy- al Canadian Club, Toronto, and the Rochester Yacht Club. The Fisher cup was won by the Rochester Yacht (lub a sco of vears ago, and has been held by it since. It was successfully defended by the Genesee two years ago acainst the Canadian Beaver. The proposed race will likely be between the Rochester vacht Helene, and Good- erham's Clorita. Miss eleventh suits, $1.95 to $1.50, thing to equal them in Kingston. ~ H. B.
