Mr. McKee's 'Statement. * Smithfield, = Aug. 23.--To the Edit- or © Wil you allow me the privilege of correcting some statements publish- ed in, last Monday's Whig by Capt. Roys, of the steamer "Aletha." First: He says (*Mr. McKee was "perfectly aware that the passengers were to be transferred to other steamer on the return trip, as 1 told him when waking the contract that I had to be in Brockviile early on Tuesday morn- ing.') He never told me any such thing and the first intimation I had that he wished us to' change from -- the "Atha" was when we, reached King- ston on our way home. In the early part of July, when the excursion was talied over between Capt. Roys and myself, I understood that he would Friday and return I knew nothing some on Monday morning. to the contrary until July 30th, when I learned that the "Aletha" was un- der contract to run from Picton to Kingston on Mondays and therefore could not come for us to the park on Mondyy morning. 1 was sorry for this and urged the captain to make some arrangements by which we could reach home early Monday evening. Keturning with the Varuha party was suggested as, an acceptable way out of the difficulty. : On the way down on Friday. the told us he was negotiating cal tain "Teg r for a newpsteamer, and, if his offer was accepted, as he fully expected it would be, she woull be hi: the" next day, and, if so, he would come with her to "the park for us on Monday morning and get us home in good time Monday evening, to which we cladly. assented. 'The next day he wired me that the "Aletha" would be at the park for us at one o'clock Monday afternoon (she came at 2:20). Had he come for us in the morning as we expected, with a boat, we would have been delightéd and even wood at Kineston if he had provided a boat that could have conveyed = us home comfortably, we would have cheerfully transferred for his accommo- dation, although such transferrence on the journey 'had not once been hinted at. The second statement is also un true. Hé says 'the Wednesday before the excursion | asked Mr. McKee for a release from the contract, but he re- fured * He did not see me nor speak to. me the Wednesday before the ex cursion, and at no time did he. give me the slightest intimation that he wished release from the contract. On the 30th July I threatened to cancel my order for the 'Aletha' because the written contract was not in harmony with the verbal agreement. made pue- viously: but the contract avas changed as it now stands and afterward duly stoned. s Third : He says 'the Rival was suitable for the work she was = called upon to do." We sav she was unclean and the odor was disgusting in the extreme. There were not chairs for one-third of our party, nor room to place them even if we had them, so much space was taken up with our Iv ce, and the boal's cargo of gen i merchan- dixe and live stock, including a hor a sheep and several hogs. The floor in the centre of the boat was constantly wet and in places the water came over the ladies' shoe tops. The boat had a few smoked - and smoking coal oil lanterns which gave so little light that we literally groped in the darkness. When daylight came we found that those who had come in contact with the woodwork had their clothing spoil. ed with old paint. f she was suitable for the work <he was called upon to do, che must: have been called upon to torture 275 peo ple for over twelve hours. As to his other statement that "the Rival was fully licensed and had pro- per office we will leave it in. the hands of the minister of marine at Ottawa 'to decide and mete oat such punishment as the occasion calls for in the "interest = of the travelling public. --Yours respectfully, T. Montreal, Aug. 25.--Antoine Gag- non, junk dealer ana schooner owner, has returned from Belle Isle, where he has spent seven weeks on board his vessel, the Marie Josephine. He vis ed the scene where the Dominion line steaniship Scotsman was wrecked on Septembier 22nd, 1899, when thirteen lives were lost. His divers attempted to reach the wrecked vessel, but with- out much success, becausé of the strong winds and the depth of water --120 feet--in which the wrecked ves- sel lving." One of the divers did, however, succeed in reaching the ves- sel ana reported it lying on a rocky bottom, still intact, but could not re- cover anything except a pot, coverea with shellwork. Mr. Gagnon will renew his efforts next. vear to save, something from the wreck. Finding it impossible to load his schooner with salvage from the Scotsman he went te the south-west Belle Isle and took on a cargo of of the wrecked steamer Mont- real, which caine to grief there thir- teen vears pgo. London, Aug.*25.--A harrowing holi- day tragedy occurred at Filey, a wat- ering place near Scarborough. Five children, playing on the sands, were cut off by the inflowing tide, and drowned. before their mothers, who were sitting on the heach, had noticed the danger which threatened them. The shore at the scene of the tragedv was deserted and no boats were available. The mothers of the children and oth- ers made heroic attempts at a res- cue. The eldest child made a futile at- tempt to. save the voungest one by holding it up in his arms. Negro Business Men Meet. Richmond, Va., Aug. 25.--"Not roes in politics, but more in SO is the motto of the Nation- Q Jusiness League;--which be- gan its third annual convention in Richmond to-day. The league was or- ganized in Boston three vears and its every effort has been and is airected toward encouraging the col- ored race to. engage in business and agricultural pursuits. That the desired conditions are being brought about is evidenced by the. reports prepared for presentation at the present session of the league. These reports show that there is scarcelv any line of - business ago, to=day, from that of banking down to the smallest lines" of merchanaizing, in which the negro is not engaged. The heirs claim 350 acres of land in what is now heart of Philadelphia, on a grant from the lieutenant-governor of the colony of New York, which was later confirmed by letters-patent from the first governor of Pennsylvania, William Penn. The heirs believe that they can. prove title to the ground, which it is declared was leased to the city of Philadelphia by Daniel Pegg, the third of the line. They have en- gaged able counsel to represent them and to go to Philadelphia to search the record for proofs.
