vm © from Joe. THE DAILY WHIG. FRIUAY, x SEPTEMBER 19. VALUE OF TESTIMONY. Greater Than Assertion. There is none of us so hardened but that when we have been able to aid our fellow creatures by conferring a benefit or bring a little comfort into their lives we like to have apprecia- tion shown. This generally affords more pleasure than the performance of the act itself, and in this connection the following letter from a Paris, Tex- as, lady is of more than usual 'inter- est : 'Dear I'riends : I address vou as "such, for you have been such to me. I sufiered for three years off and on with piles. I was treated at the hos- pital, 'and the new and elegant hospi- tal, of Memphis; they only gave me temporary relief. 1 came' west, think- ing the change of air and water would benefit me; five months ago the bleed- ing piles came back on me, and bled so much that I thought I would die. 1 have had four of the finest doctors in this section of Texas; all they did was to finally nearly let me co to my grave; ail they wanted was a big sum of money from me and to operate on me. 1 'said no, no surgeon's knife would enter' me: if it was mv time to die God knew it, and when I diedl would die all together. I began hear- ing about your medicine, I had no faith in vow, but I sent and got a box of your Pyramid Pile Cure; in two days the blood flow had slacken- ed to one-half the amount, &nd in one week 1 felt so much better I wa alked four- blocks and did a little house- work. I was not bleeding then in three weeks I was well, God bless vou for putting such a wonderful medicine within the reach of suffering men and women. 1 shall never cease to recom- mend vour medicine or be without it ; also I used your. Pyramid: Pills. Sallie A. Hearndon." 'lestiniony like this should be more . convincing than all claims and assertions, . and should Jeave no doubt in the mind of the reader as to the merit of the remedy. Pyramid Pile Cure is cold by drug- gists for fiitv cents a package, or will be mailedl by the 'makers to any ad- dress upon receipt of price. ER RUN NORMANDY WEDDING. n A Pretty Opera That Was Cleverly Presented. | An appreciative audience witnessed the produttion of that delightiul opera A Deans Wedding" at the Grand Opera House last evening. It is one of the most charming operatic pro- ductions ever presented here. The company, though a small one, is com- poced of clever actors.and actresses ' possessing sweet, well-trained voic s. The staging of the opera is artistic, and the grouping of the performers presented some delightful sceses "A Normandy Wedding" seemed to please the audience more than any comic opera 'seen here in a long time. The cause for much of the enthusiasm is easily exp dained. Tn the firse place, the plot is perfectly clear and intelli- gible to everyone from the outset. The Situations are funny, the dialogue and lyrics unusually bright ard The music well written and of that catchy order that always jumps into imme: diate popularity. The production and company presenting the opera is of the best. Pretty little Grace Cameron has, with her chic ways, her marvel lous voice and her charmingly agave sive self-assertivenssses made the hit as the "Goose Girk" She was ably supported by Harry Brown and Wil- liam Herbert, the last named having a rare tenor voice. The duet in the last act by Miss Cesssy and Mr. Her bert was a gem. The "good night" «lo by Miss Cameron and chorus by the company at the close of the first act .was entrancingly sweet, and half a dozen encores were demanded. "San Toy' Coming. BARCLAY If He Decides to Accept Offer of Trustees -- Want Him to Re- main in Montreal--Will Con- sider the Matter for Sonre Days. Montreal Herald. "lf 1 accept the offer of Queen's University, prine Tpal, 1 will be guided solely by a sense of my duty. More 1 cannot say. *1 have only received by telegraph the offer of the trustees. To-night or to-morrow a ddegation will be here to lay the offer before me. My first in- timation must be to them. "It is a matter that requires the most serious reflection. 1 have not vet had time to think it ont fully. 1 know the dire need of Queen's univer sitv. But 1 have, as you know, been for nineteen years the pastor of St. Paul's, and © the very thought of so ering the association gained during all that time is painful." i And this was as much as the Rev. Dr. Barclay would say concerning his sclection by the trustees of Queen's university to fill the post of principal so long held hv the late Dr. Grant. He spoke with the deep feeling of a strong man torn between the two orcat emotions of love and duty--love for his present life and work and his duty to Queen's University. He rea- lizes that now more than ever Queen's needs a .strone hand at the Tick, And he realizes keenly all that his ab sence from the pulpit of St. Paul's would mean to the church, the con- gregation and himself. It is plain that the hew field of en degvor opened before him has impel ling attractions, Whether these will be strong cnough to conquer the love he bears the work that he has so well performed for nearly two decades isa question which every member of his congregation is discussing to-day with anxious interest. A number of the trustees: and prom- nent members of St. Paul's congre- sation. who were seen this morning, kitew nothing of the matter further than that the offer had been made. One and alll, they expressed the sin- cerest hope that Dr. Barclay would not relinquish, the pastorate of St. Paul's. His resignation, should it "he cubmitted, would be a staggering blow. The place which he has won for himself during nineteen years of un- wavering devotion to St. Paul's, they feel can never be filled by another. It is feared by more than one that his departure would lead to a disintegra- tion: of. a congregation which owes its strength and loyalty largely to per affection with. which he is re There is not the slichtest doubt that every eliort will he brought tH bear upon Dr. Barclay io prevail upon him to remain. When once he had made up his mind. however, he would immedia tely notify the trustees of his, decision as he felt that it was his duty to deal directly with tNem. His decision could then be transmitted to the pub Lie by the university authorities.
