SHOW HONOR Chamberlain Is' Highly Re- garded Now TO SEND HIM OFF Areas IN GOOD FASHION IS THE DE- SIRE. A General Who Has Faith in West Point--Big Profits as the Result of: Municipal Owner- ship and Enterprize. New York, Nov. 1.--The Tribune's London cable says : The colonial sec- retary needs to be delivered from the veal of his ardent worshippers. Not only is the brass bedstead on which he will sleep on ship board described in detail, but there are numerous pro- jects for speeding him on his journey to the Cape, by a series of receptions at the Guild Hall, banquet at the Co- lonial Institute and elsewhere, and other demonstrations of an unusual character. As he was received and en- tertainea at Guild Hall recently, it is improbable ~ that further honors will be heaped upon him in that quarter, and his closest friends intimate that he will be content to depart with the expressions of good-will at the Bir- mingham banquet. Ii there be any other demonstrations it will be under colonial, rather than city, auspices. The tory prejudice against Mr. Cham- berlain has been dispelled by the loy- alty with which he has supporfed Premier Balfour. The Boer generals are emphatic in expressing approval of his journey and in forecasting a fricnaly reception by the Dutch com- munity. Gen. Wood, who inspected the best German military school two months ago, has been visiting" the chief Brit- ish nursery of art of war, but his faith in the superiority of West Point in all matters relating to the educa- tion of army officers is unshaken. The whirligig of time makes strange revolutions. The Municipal Journal, which has been taking a serious view of criticisms of the London Times on the ad inistration of English and Scotch and resenting Robert P. Porter comparisons with United States electrical undertakings, pub- lishes the detailea: figures respecting ies the results of municipal trading in general ana tramway ownership by corporations in particular. The re- sults disclose larger profits than had been heretofore claimed, Darlington, Birmingham, Bolton, Manchester, Leeds and Nottingham being conspicu- ous examples of remunerative munici- pal enterprise. The advocates of mu- nicipal socialism assert that the tramway business, as managed by the town "coungils, is profitable enough to float another electrical trust and do not hesitate to attribute interested motives to all critics and opponents of municipal enterp Editors In Jail. Grapes In The West. Edmonton, N.W.T., Nov. 1.--A car load of grapes from the Niagara dis- trict of Ontario arrived on Wednes- day. The grapes were on sale in the fruit stores on Thursday at 63c. for a ten-pounil._basket. The price is consil- ered very reasonable, especially as the PRAISE FOR METHUEN. He Was Given Higher Order of the | Bath. London, Nov. -1.--At a Devises yesterday afternoon, the Marquis of Lansdowne, secretary of state for foreign affairs, proposed the Iuncheon, at health of Gen. Lord Methuen and, in speaking to his toast, said that no officer had borne a heavier share of stress and burden of war than Gen. Methuen or had borne it more cheer- fully. He quoted Lord Roberts' eulo- ies of Gen. Methuen's services . at odder River and Magersfontein, and predicted that Gen. Methuen would be promoted to a higher grade in the or- der of the bath. General Methuen, in reply, the chivalry and kindness of Delarey, and of the other Doers praised Gen Ww ho LORD METHUEN. GEN. captured him, and spoke highly of their bravery and thoughtfulness. He said in his last mishap not a single "Tommy Atkins' left him. Though their hearts yere all right, he thought that in the future it would be advis- able to 'teach the Yeomanry their duty before they were placed in front of an enemy. Lord Lansdowne's- prediction con- cerning Methuen was quickly fulfilled. The Official Gazette last night an- nounced that Gen. Lord Methuen, who was a Knight Commander of the Ord- er of the Bath, had been made a Knight Grand Cross of that order. Other appointments in: recognition of services in South Africa are those of Generals French and Hamilton to be made lieutenant-generals. General French also is made a Knight Com- mander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George. WHAT IS DESIRED. Cordial Relations Between Britain and Portugal. The annual re- port of Adjutant-fieneral Corbin con tains a strong recommendation for the re-establishment of the army canteen. Highest Revenue Ever Known in the Dominion at This Season-- A Former Legislator Died on Thursday Night Last. Ottawa, Nov. L.--It is fully under- stood that Frank Pedley, superinten- det of immigration, is to be the new deputy minister of Indian affairs. Since the present government took oftice and Hayter Reed stepped out of the Indian department, James A. Smart has been administering that branch of the service. For the four months of the current fis.al year, up to the end of October, the customs collections of Canada amountid to $12,311,618, an increase of $1,591,603 over the same period of 1901, and by far the highest revenue ever known in the dominion at this season. [For October alone the total was $3,210,901, an increase over 1901 cf over half a million. Simon James Dawson, C.E., who re- presented Algoma in the Ontavio leg- islature from 15874 to 1878, when he was returned to the Dominion parlia- ment for the same constituency and re- presented it until the general election of 1891, died here 'on Thursday. le was aged eighty-two years. mission ABJURE THE POPE. Catholic Church of the Philippines is Formally Inaugurated. Munila, Nov. 1.--The Catholic church of the Philippines. has been inaugura- ted here. Mass was celebrated and Bishop Aglipay, the leader of the movement, delivered 'an address, in which he renounced allegiance to' the papal authority: He said the - new church would maintain practically all the religious forms of the Roman Ca- tholi¢ church. Aguinaldo has been pated as a lay official of the Church of the Philip- pines. He did not attend the inaugu- ral ceremonies on account-of illness, but sent a letter approving the mat- ter. . Paris Musicians Strike. Paris, Nov. 1.--The musicians em- ploved at sixteen theatres and music halls struck for high rates, and pick- cted these resorts the other evening. They were not replaced. Several man- agers, alarmed for the matinees, gave way with haste. The strikers, carry- ing violin cases, trombones, bassoons and other instruments arvived at the Labor Exchange this afternoon. The speakers were bitter against MM. Saint-Saens and Ganne, the compos: ers who had expressed themselves - as unfriendly to the strikers. The meet- ing decided that all orchestras be- longing to the syndicate refuse to play music written by the offending composers. Going Home To Vote: Washington, D.C., Nov. 1.-To-dav witnessed a general exodus of depart: ment clerks and other federal office holders who are going home to vote. For a political ofi-year the number of those returning' home is regarded as unusually large, a fact that tends to contradict the general supposition that' the elections to be held next Tuesday have not aroused much inter- est. The close contests in Indiana, Pennsylvania, New York, and other states where the result is in doubt will attract everyv_federal office-holder hailing from those commonwealths back home to cast his ballot. Students' Strike Ends. Lansing, Mi h.., Nov. l.--At a mass meeting of the students of the Michi- gan Agricultural College a proposition from the faculty to end the strike was accepted; the students will resume class work and a new committee of the faculty will hear their grievances. If they can show that the former act- ion of the faculty in suspending seven teen students for participating in the freshman-sophomore class rush was unjust the sentence will be changed, and they will have the right of ap pealing to the state board of agricul ture. Buggies To Cost More. York, Nov, 1.---An advance of from ten to twenty-five per cent. in the prices of carriages and buggies, the same to go into effect to-day, is annoupeed 'bv the manufacturers. The reason given for the advance is that the price of materials' has incréased from fifteen t&t 100 per cent. and that corresponding increase ix necessitat- ed in the selling price of the completed article to save the manufacturer actu- al loss.
