Duelling Duelling Should Only be Resorted to in the Most Flagrant Cases --Lives of the Student Officers Too Valuable to be Risked for Trifles. Berlin, Nov. 19.--The movement fof the abolition of pistol duelling started by the students' associations is ex- tending throughout the universities of Germany. Associations of Berlin and several other universities have decided to present an address to the officers' corps, and the war office, in which it will be pointed out that the lives of student officers are too valuable to the country to allow them to be put to the risk of duelling for trifles. President Rooseveltand manv other guests of note took part in the programmie and the occasion was one of the most notable in the recent his- tory of Memphis. Residences and busi- ness houses were gay with bunting, the streets were jammed with people wearing Wright buttons and Wright badees, during the entire day, and all business was_ generally suspended pur- suant to a proclamation of the may- or. General Wright was escorted to the city hall and welcomed by hund- reds of the most prominent citizens of Memphis. In company with President Roosevelt, Secretary Cortelvou, Pre- sident Stuyvesant Fish of the Illi nois Central" railroad 'and numerous other visitors of prominence, General Wright reviewed a procession compos- ed of all military organizations and numerous civic societies of Memphis and vicinity. How Matters the PREFER DEATH. Chinese Officials Commit Suicide-- Réign Of Terror Breaks Out. Victoria, B.C., Nov. 19.--Advices have been received from Canton to the effect that the Kwangsi rebels have captured the prefectural city of Szen- fu and also several district cities in the same prefecture. A number of the officials of the captured cities either committed suicide or were| killed by the rebels, while some succeeded in escaping. \ It is stated on good authority that the rebels recently received a large amount of provisions, magazine rifles and ammunition, which caused. -: the rebellion, dormant for some months, to be renewed. That He Died On The Stage. Ro hester, N.Y., Nov. 19.--Mi:s Jen nie Reed, daughter of the Rev." F. H. Reed, of the Disciples' church of South Butler, was pi ing readings at Lansingburg, anil after finishing a reading was bowing to the audience in response to an encore, when sud- denly she gasped, threw up her hands, and fell foward on the stage in a fnint. Ber- nier, the Canadian explorer, who pro poses to make a dash for the north pole, has written to the city council to the effect that he will build his vessel in Vietorig if thé city ives him financial assistance. He says the Dominion government has promised 860,000, and- he has collected $30,000. Justice Armour Praised.
