A BAD CASE 'of KIDNEY TROUBLE CURED BY DOAN'S KIDNEY PILLS, Kidney Troubles, no matter of what kind or what stage of the disease, can be quickly and permanently cured by the use of these wonderful pills. Mr. Joseph Ieland, Alma, N.W.T., recommends them to all kidney trouble sufferers, when he says:--I was troubled with dull head- aches, had frightful dreams, terrible pains in my legs and a frequent desire to urinate. Noticing DOAN'S KIDNEY PILLS recommended for just such annoy- ances as mine, it occurred to me to give them a trial, so I procured a box of them, and was very much surprised at the effectual cure they made. I take a great deal of pleasure in recommending them to all kidney trouble sufferers. It was not until a whole week had elapsed that the Glenora was found. The case of the Bannockburn may be parallel with that of the Glenora. The MT. company's big steamer may, per chance, be helplessly drifting in Lake Superior, where it has plenty of space in which to get lost. NEW CITIZENS SIXTY-ONE GERMAN MACHI- NISTS ARRIVE HERE. i Will Labor in the Kingston Lo- comotive Works--A Desirable Class of Workmen--Doubling Capacity of the Work--Not Aimed at Strikers. On Sunday at noon Kingston re- ceived a desirablq addition to her population, the increase being made up of sisty-one machinists, brought out by Corne:i Jermingham, man- ager director, to work in the Locomo- tive Works. The new arrivals are made up of Lfty-nine Germans and two Englishmen. They were secured at Dusseldorf; 'Germany, without anv difficulty, and were selected from over 1,300 personal applicant:, and all hear testimonials of being first-class mechani 's. ! Mr. Bermingham left ber 23rd, saiiing from New York on the 26th. He went direct to Ger- many via England, and made his way to Dusse dorf, near Cologne, a city of upwards of 200,000 inhabitants. It is situated close to Essen, where 'is loca" ted Krupp's famous gun works. Mr. Bermingham was seen to-day and asked about his trip. He gra- ciously gdte an outline of it, and all information connected with the ployment of the new arrivals. he : "I went' direct té Dusseldorf, 8 the centre of the iron manufactur- ing industry in Germany. Upon en tering a new potition, these testimon- ials are surrendeyed, and returned up- m leaving. In this way a mechanic's aveer is followed closely. Well, 1 have in my posses sion the highest tes timonials 'concerning these men. They are the cream of the 1,300 or more who personally applied for engage- ment. They are a desirable class of nen to bring to any community, ome of them being college graduates. Un derstand this, however, that had thi recent strike here not taken place, we would have had to take this means of securing skilled workmen, as the sup- ply in this country is Timited.' It has been asserted in certain quar ters that by bringing the Germans here, the Canadian alien labor law has been violated. This is not the cage, and only ignorance of the law re- sponsible" for such assertions. The Can adian alien law stipulates that its provisions shall be applied against those countries only which have such a law directed against Canada. Ger- came is many has not such a measure. DEATH'S HAND SHIPWRECK MARINERS SAV- ED WHEN END IS NI*AR. On Stormy Sea in Open Boat-- Captain and Crew of the American Schooner Pendleton Brothers Suffer Nineteen Hours and are Nearly Exhausted When Picked up. New York, Dec. 1.--The Quebec com- pany"s steamer Fontabelle, which ar rived yesterday from the West Indies, brought eight shipwrecked mariners who were picked up at sea in an open bot on Saturday evening. The ship- wrecked men were Capt. W. G. Knee land and the crew of seven men of the American schooner Pendleton Broth- ers. The Pendleton Brothers leit New York on November 26th, with a cargo of cement for.Mobile. Almost from the start the s¢hooner had bad weather. The vessel strained badly and began to leak. On the previous vovage the schoon- r had carried a cargo of coal, which in the pumps. This condition was not discovered until they were brought into use and in consequence the water gained rapidly before they could be cleared. At ten o'clock on the night of Nov- ember 28th, the schooner's crew took to their boat and - shortlv afterward the schooner went to the bottom. After nineteen hours' exposure in an open boat to the cold, wintry weath- er, nearly exhausted and wet to the skin, the Fontabelle picked them up. The schooner Pendleton Brothers was built at Belfast, Me., in 1899, was of 672 tons net register and was own- ed by Pendleton Brothers of this city. "A GREAT ORGANIZATION. What Federation of Labour Has Accomplished. Weekly. years ago Harper's o Some the Knights of La numbered one "million, but now their membership has fallen below two hundred thousand. The American Federation of Labor is credited at the present with 850,000 members. On more than one occasion this body has averted the paralysis of business which would follow a general strike. At Chicago, in 15894, for instance, when the American railway union de- manded a general or sympathetic strike of all mechanics, the'executive committee of the American Federa- tion rejected the demand. Again, in 1901, when the Amalgamated Associa- tion of lron, Steel and Tin Workers asked for a sympathetic strike, believ- ing that with such assistance they would be able to coerce the United States Steel Corporation, the Ameri can Federation of © Labor refused to comply with their request. These facts and figures indicate that, ex- trades, American labor organizations have hitherto been too weak to dictate terms to their em- ployers; and, se¢ondly, that the dan- gerous power of ordering a general or sympathetic strike has heen spar- ingly exercised. .- It is the prudent course pursued by the American Federation of + Labor which has led many onlookers to hope, if not fo be- lieve, that the: United Mine Workers will keep: the promise made by Mr. Mitchel: their name--the promise to abide for three years by the de- cision "rendered by a majority of "the commission of arbitration appointed by President Roosevelt.
