Fort Lee, N.J., Dec. 17.--By the ex- plosion of gas tank yesteray the re- sidence of John Puglughi was demol- ished. his six children instantly killed. and his wife so seriously injured that her recovery is despaired of. The dead are: Ida Puglughi, aged four years; Tillie, twelve; Irene, ten: Adeline, sev- en, and George, five years. The mother was found 200 fpet from where the explosion took plage, her right arm almost torn from her body. Just returned' from school, the child- ren were at the lunch table when the explosion occurred. The roof of the house was blown out. An adjoining cottage was also partially destroyed. The debris immediately took fire and the bodies were badly charred. Mrs. Puglughi, who was waiting on the children at the table was blown through the side of the house and was found in the road. The father was away from home. HISTORICAL SOCIETY. Paper Read Last Night by James McArthur. The Historical Society met last even- ing at St. George's Hall, Dr. Walkem. K-C-. presiding. Three members were received, J. B. Walkem, H. Tandy and M. H. Folger. Others have appliea for membership. The paper read Arthur, it being a one given by him was by James Mec- continuation of the some time ago on the derivation of names of counties, : townships and municipalities in On- tario. It was full of useful informa- tion. After referring to the origin of a number of names, he proceeded to give interesting particulars in connee- tion with the persons from whom the names were derived. Mr. McArthur pointed out that the names were nev. er mere arbitrary sounds, but were records of the past, inviting historical investigation. The counties mentioned by the speak- were : Welland, Oxford, Elgin, Kent, Lamb- ton, Kssex, Middlesex, Perth, Huron, Bruce, Gray; the districts, Haliburton, Muskoka, Parry Sound, Nipissing: the townships, principally those of the surrounding counties, including Fronte- nac. Some of these townships, he said, were named after King George III and his numerous family. Some after Brit- ish statesmen, naval and military heroes and noblemen. Some after Ca- nglian officials; some after places in (freat Britain, and a few after ani- mals. Oso, he explained, is Spanish for "bear." and its name was bestowed by Sir Peregrine Maitland, so long a licutenant-governor of Upper Canada. Floss, Tiny and Tay, now populous townships, were named by him aftér three small lap dogs, belonging to his wife. A hearty vote of thanks was tender ed Mr. McArthur, on motion of Rev. The funeral of the late Alexander MacDonnell took place on Friday™ at Winnipeg, to St.- Mary's church, where requiem high mass was conducted by Father Guillet, after which the 10 mains were interred in St. Mary's ce metery. The deceased had been a resi dent of Winnipeg for many vears. He was a brother to J. A. MacDonell, ex M.P. for Selkirk Charles MacDonell, manager of the Winnipeg Machinery & Supply company, both of Winnipey and to A. J. MacDonell, manager of Ontario bank, Ningston. Breaking Open Boat Houses. Some of the goods stolen from Mr. Truesdale's boat house some time ago have been now reposing in the police station. A Michigan Woman Found by a Rich Farmer. 'Grand Rapids, Mich., Dee, 17.--Mrs. Sarah Morley of Alpena, who with her four children has been in almost destitute circumstances for several years, while at her daily task over the wash-tub, received g letter from Dub- lin, Canada, conveying the informa- tion that her father, who disappeared suddenly thirty-two vears ago, when she was but seven years of age, was alive and the possessor of a fortune of $375,000, which he amassed in the west. Mrs. Morley had long believed her father dead. She and her children will go at once to Dublin to join him. He wrote that he would provide for them.
