Montreal Star. The earnings of the. Richelieu & On- tario Navigation company for the year which is now coming to an end promise well. As yet the books are not closed, so that no exact figures can be given, but Senator Forget, president of the company, is of opin- ion that the net receipts will about equal those of last year, which, con sidering the Pan-American attraction in 1902] is looked upon as extremely favorable. The earnings this year have been considerably than last, but the expenses have heen proportionate- ly that the net receipts re- main about the same. In 1900 ithe com- pany earned: $129,002 net, and in 1901 earned the sum of $166,097 net. The dividends for 1901 gmounted to $134 - 952 being six per cent. on the capi- tal stock, and $26,145 carried to the surplus. The earnings on the western lines fell off and those on the Saguenay and Quebec lines show an increase. It is expected that with the addition of the new steamer Mon- treal, which is now lving in the har- bor, and which will be completed for the openine of business next vear, the receipts between Montreal and Quebec will be increased materially. The addi tion of the newly purchased steamer Virginia should also tena to increase business, on the Saouenav route. Dur ing the past vear the additions to the capital stock aggregate a trifle over 8i:00,000, which must he considered to future dividends. The sum, added to the capital stock will increase the funds required for dividends by some 836,000. . The increase in the company's busi- ness is well shown by the fact that the Montreal ticket office did a larger this year than ever before. was a record one for this office, ax compared with all previous ones. But the season of 1902 shows even a larger increase over last vear, and this in spite of the backward sea- son, which prevented a great manv Americans from making their" usual summer excursions. AND THE DEMAND FOR LAND IS GREAT Negotiations Will Have Made With Other Governments --Capital Is to Be Devoted to Developing Mining Property. Toronto, Dec. 18.--Judge Utt, of Chicago, whose colossal immigration scheme for settling tenant farmers from the states on New Ontario lands { has attracted much attention, has in- formed J. C. Hartney, Manitoba im- migration agent, here that his syndi- cate is in receipt of so many applica- tions from United States tenant farm- ers that it will be necessary for it to enter into negotiations with the Mani- toba and Dominion governments simi- lar to those proceeding with the On- tario government, in order to secure land in the territories on which to lo- cate settlers.. A number of prominent Buffalo and Toronto capitalists held a meeting here, yesterday, to arrange details for the exploitation of several mining pro- perties in which the syndicate has be- come interested. Dr. Watson, Bufialo, speaking to a reporter, stated that the company, which represented over $9,- 000,000 of capital was interested in a number of United States and Can- adian mining properties, but at the present time it was not prepared to make its plans public. He admitted that the company intended exploiting several of the gold properties in New Ontario, which had been practically abandoned. The Liverpool Post sa; "If Venezuela can dispense with sup- plies from abroad the blockade may 20 on indefinitely, and the naval op- eration will bring no payment either for Great Britain or Germany." Sir Robert contends that a blockade will be useless against a | bankrupt state, while the seizure of | the customs will be tantamount to | annexation and full of danger con-id- ering the peculiar relations of Vene- zuela to the United States." "Further,}'- continues the writer, "however much we may bring Vene- zucla to its knees, no solvent govern- ment will remain with which to deal.' Sir Robert strikes his most alarming note when he refers to the «danger of Germany embroiling Great Britain with the United States. He believes Germany would not hesitate to oc- | cupy Venezuelan territory and he | thinks the said about British | claims the better. He says he doubts if Great Britain has any good moral claims against Venezuela and con- cludes with these words: "I'he best course is to crv offi at all hazards {and at the most exact punishment for | the injured seamen by getting hold it possible of the guilty Venezuelan of- ficials."'
