Copper . pares MEETING HELD BY THE COUNCIL OF THE BOARD OF TRADE, Various Communications Dealt With--Committee Appointed to Assist in the¢ Sununer Hotel Scheme. A meeting of the council of the board of trade was held yesterday al- ternoon in the office of the secretary, Francis King. There were present, Captain John Gaskin, and Messrs. Pense, G. Y. Chown, W. B. Skinner, J. McKelvey, A. Chadwick, J. Redden and F. King. . The minutes disclosed thes fact that wo meetings of the countil of the board had been called recently, but that no quorum had been obtained on account of various other matters, which had prevented attendance of the m rs. La Chambre de Commerce in Mont- real, sent a communication asking the board to support their proposition that action be taken to bring about the appointment of Lord Strathcona, as the next governor-general of Cana- da. After discussion it was unanim- ously resolved that it would be inad" visable to advocate this scheme. The council felt that a step in this direc- tion would ih some measure at least lead to the loosening of the ties that bind Canada to the motherland, thé fact being kept in mind that the gov- ernor-general is a direct representative of royalty and the home government. The Board of Trade in Orillia asked the Kingston Board to support their representations to the provincial legis. lature in favor of prohibition of the system of granting bonuses to indus- tries. In discussion it was pointed out that the provincial statute of last year absolutely prohibited the grant ing of any bonuses with a view to moving an industry from any place in this province to a new location. On account of this and because action bv the province would not prevent muni cipalities in other provinces from hold ing out inducements to Ontario indus tries it was resolved to take no action upon Orillia's request. Another reason advanced was that the conditions in the vote upon a by-law even when it is submitted now are almost prohibi tive. The Chamber of Commerce in Lon: don, KEng., announced that the next congress of chambers of commerce for the empire would be held in Montreal in the summer of this year. The King- ston board was asked to send dele gates and the secretary was instruct ed to accept the invitation. Delegates will be appointed in due course at a later date. The Single Tax Association in Tor onto asked for support of a proposi- tion to memorialize the government to make the new transcontinental rail way a government enterprise and bo- nus it only with grants of land. The council decided to take no action A newly incorporated lock company sent a circular from the States, ask- ing the board to interest themselves jin investing Canadian capital in the industry. The company admitted hav- ing no rating-and did not seem pre pared to put much capital into the concern themselves, and no action was therefore taken. Communications from boards of trade and mining and engineering so- cieties in British Columbia, asked the Kingston Board of Trade to support these bodies in urging the Dominion government to alter the tariff upon, lead 80 as to protect home industry even in a slight deryrec. As deputations had already waited upon the govern- ment in Ottawa and the matter is now under consideration, the council of the Kingston board took no action at this date. Upon the request from the committee on industries of the city council, Pre- sident Gaskin, and Messrs. Pense, Chadwick and King were appointed a committee from the hoard of trade to confer in regard to the summer hotel project now before the committee of the eitv council. A general discussion of the scheme followed, and the com mittee obtained the views of the coun- cil of the hoard. The council also took up the question of the pending fire and light arbitration. They will support the by-law when it is submitted and in every way assist the city council in carrying it through. Awaiting some decision in regard to the next step in the 'appellate courts, no definite re commendation is as yet made to the city council. Boys At Hockey. Three oft the local junior hockey league matches were played last night and this morning at the Kingston rink. Last night, St. George's B. de feated Hilleroft 4 to 3, twenty minutes overtime being played. At eight o'clock this mormng, Hillcroft met Regiopolis and won hy 3 to 1 Then at nine o'clock, St. George's A. were defeated by St. George's B., a team of youths, by 3 to 0. The A. team was handicapped by the absence of Lockett, who is suffering from water on the knee as the result of last Sa- turday's match. Next Saturday morn ing Hilleroft plays St. George's A and in the evening the final match will take place between St. George's B. and the morning winners. Colonial Stock Food. Sn : Committee Formed to Promote Its Establishment. The closing lecture on "Forestry," by Prof. Fernow, was delivered in the School of Mining building; Friday ev- oning before a large number of inter ested persons. The lecturer dealt with the subject of engineering in connec tion with forests, showing how forests should be laid out, with regard to rules, so that the greatest advantages may be obtained, thus facilitating the transportation of timber to the mar ket. The lecturer also explained the mode in which streams are utilized for transportation of logs and tiniher, as well as the means used for preventing floods in mountainous districts, by providing dams and impediments in mountain streams, whereby the water is held back and utilized when needed. The lecture was profusely illustrat ed. Views were given of the mode in which this work is done in Germany and the United States. The lecture re ceived an interesting local color by reason of the lecturer giving illustra tions showing the mode in which the Calvin company carries on ite 'large rafting business. At the close of the lecture, on be hali of the board of governors of the Mining, GG. M. Macdonnell expressed the obligations all rested Prof. Fernow for the great service he had rendered the school of Mining and the public generally by his course of lectures. The lecturer had really shown all interested that for estry was of public, and even national importance. The speaker suggested that those present should remain and form themselves into a committee to promote the scheme to establish a school of forestry in Kingston.
